Lets be serious, probably not a chance for a "In the Style of Ubique" challenge at this moment.

but...

this whole comment/censorship/force out a beloved member debacle stemmed from the need of an artist
remind us that we weren't even using our imaginations that well in the imagination challenge.
Very similar to Don's comment "go take a 100 pictures with your eyes shut and pick the best one." - which spawned
a great challenge.

And amidst the "belly button lint" and "pencil erasers IV" challenges, in the past 6 months to one year we have
had some awesome challenges, some super "in the style of challenges," the Gyaban show, and some challenges with wall-to wall great photos.

SO perhaps rather than inflame the underlying situation with Member X and the Site Council(which sounds like a late 60's San Francisco funk Band)-

Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than me could offer a suggestion for a challenge, in Ubique's style, that has a better chance of becoming reality-

Such as the "Actually, and we are serious this time, Use your Imagination challenge"
or the "Sure you take crisp pictures and process them in a fancy manner but this time make them mean something challenge"
or you fill in the blank.

How about an "Imitative and shallow drivel" challenge? Oh, right, we do that every week. I've actually done well in a few of those.

Eh, they're all just separate aesthetics, ways of viewing things, systems of values. We pick, we choose which we subscribe to, but we're all just playing king of the molehill. It's a molehill. No hard feelings if you get trundled, and sometimes it's fun to climb a new one.

What about: "emotive black and white"?

Personally, the thing I've taken from this whole disturbance is that I need to put more effort into my commenting... really tell the user what I feel, or don't feel. If anything, thats what we all should take from this. More emphasis on comments. Who cares about scores.

There is no bigger problem that an artist can have than being "satisfied" with his or her work. In that sense, getting a bit pissed off and challenged to be more thoughtful should be welcomed.

Otherwise we are a stock photo site. Slick shots and super slick processing. I am much more well suited for "Imitative and shallow drivel."

Nothing minimal or basic about Paul's processing.

MESSAGE FROM UBIQUE:

I have received my RSVP and am posting these words with Paul's permission and at his request:

*********************************************************************************************************

Dear DPC friends and foes,

I've read the several threads following my departure, and I feel suitably uncomfortable about it all.

Let's post nothing more on the subject please. Yes I got pissed off with some SC actions, but it's really not of much consequence. I'd rather leave having said that I know I'm a prickly bastard, and admitting that I've occasionally deliberately skewered a few folks who could profit from a bit of a prick. I'm eminently qualified as one of those.

I appreciate you all, without exception. I'm enriched by my time at DPC, this in spite of the fact that I am not really very interested in photography, so I haven't had much in common with most DPC members. I just love photographs, and that's not necessarily the same thing at all.

I am pleased that some of you have liked my pictures, but much more grateful that you have all allowed me to be moved by yours.

My final word is that nothing in art is more important than curiosity. Plant your flags as far from your own back yard as you dare. Then if you can still see them from that comfortable chair on your porch, move them out again. And again.

Thank you.

I'm happy to hear from Paul, thanks Mae, and though the feeling of bereavement still fills my soul, I will abide by his wishes and not post about it anymore. The spirit lives on.

To one with something to say, the words come.
The point is not the words, but a mind taking its cues from the heart.
Few drink at this fountain.

i've got an idea, how about if the whole idea of a ubique challenge was that you didn't only put a lot of effort into your pics, but you also put a lot of effort into making thoughtful comments.

While ubique is a phenomenal photographer with a phenomenal eye, what has made him special here is how he shared his vision with others through his comments.

I never got one from him, but I wish I had. Even if he tore a strip off of me and told me I took a piece of crap.

Incidentally, there is an idea forming that might bring a bit of this spirit forwards with the Sour Lemons idea. Perhaps if there were more thoughtful, but negative comments around here, people would enjoy learning more, and possibly people's skin would be a bit thicker...

While I know ubique feels a bit uncomfortable with the hero worship, I believe that he would feel a lot more comfortable if we put our emotions and energies into improving the commenting environment here.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

It is possible to dislike an image, and be civil, all at the same time.

there used to be a DPCer named Ubique. Closed his account after some sort of escapade and got everyone all huffy.

For mefnj , this is Ubique's (Paul Martin) work on the Glossom site, a very worthwhile diversion.

I just read an outstandingly inspiring comment on odriew's photograph called Firework that I thought I should share:

On Low-Fidelity Photographs:

I’m a dedicated fan of low-fidelity photographs, and this one is especially wonderful. It’s a bold gesture to offer this up as your best of 2010, because it will be dismissed with barely a thought by many of the voters, and you’ll likely be finishing down in the DPC dungeon with me I suppose. But you clearly know that already.

My love of photographs like this one of yours is driven by two opposed but connected impulses.

First, digital photography has reached the point where almost anyone can make an impressive image by buying the equipment and then slavishly copying the style and techniques of already popular photographers. You see it in the forums all the time … “How can I get this look?” etc. There's often even a bloody 'action' to be downloaded to guarantee the outcome! The resulting photographs of course all appear much the same, and are a triumph of style over substance. They may indeed look impressive but individually most are ephemeral and ultimately of no artistic or even photographic consequence whatsoever.

Second, I prefer in any case photographs that make some demands, that require the viewer to get inside the picture and experience it from there; from within. Within both self and image. Only a photograph that is in some sense unfinished – or at least only partly realised – by the photographer is capable of achieving that, at least to my satisfaction. That means photographs that don’t conform to the tedious bloody rules, photographs that leave bits of the story outside the frame, and that render what’s inside the frame with some degree of considered negligence. With a lack of fidelity, in other words.

Of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but the difference is that mine is right.

Ah, you want proof? Consider this: Look at almost any ribbon-winning image. Everything it has to offer is right there, unequivocal and complete. All of the potential experience of the image has already been had on your behalf, by the photographer; your job as its viewer is not to experience it at all, but simply to admire it. That’s all that’s been left for you.

Now look at this image, ‘Firework’, again. One could (and should) look at it a dozen times, and have a different experience each time. That’s because some of the photograph is indistinct, uncertain, ambiguous or even missing, and the job of the viewer is to add the incompletely articulated or missing stuff. And not just once; as many times and in as many ways as the photograph will allow.

That’s why I love low-fidelity photography, and it’s why this wondrous example of it is in my top two picks for the Best of 2010. Thank you.
