Apple Aperture vs. Lightroom - DPChallenge Forums

which one? what you are using? I have Lightroom and don't have any issue and I got aperture from my uncle and was not sure if it is easy as Lightroom.

suggestions/ideas would help!

I have what is probably a really dumb question but what is Lightroom/Aperture compared to Photoshop? If you have PS are one of these other programs a good supplement to them or is there no reason to have either of those if you have PS?

There is no question that is a dumb question! the way I see photoshop is more of advanced photo editor and need to create/apply layers and effects to achieve what Lightroom could do. Lightroom in my opinion has bunch of built-in plugins that helps to automate some of the complexity that photoshop would have. Again Photographs goes to the detail editing where Lightroom is a quick editing!!!

Okay, thanks for the info. Maybe I will look into getting Lightroom then. It's not terribly expensive, so that's a plus. To upgrade PS(I have CS4) I need to get a second mortgage.

Well, you must own a macintosh computer with Mac OSX software to take advantage of Apple's Aperture. I don't really want to argue the pros and cons of the hardware and operating software decision. If there is a doubt in your mind, then I can't help you.

For Aperture, try the Nik Software plugins which work very well.

I am a die hard Aperture user. I have tried and tried to use Lightroom because everyone tells me it's so much better, but it just does not work for me. That's purely a personal preference, I know Lightroom is a great tool, just not for me.

Aperture misses a couple of really useful tools that are available in Lightroom (eg lens correction), but I haven't found that to be a big issue because PTLens works with Aperture as a plugin.

If you choose to go with Aperture, this is an extremely good resource for all things Aperture related.

www.apertureexpert.com. The video tutorials are particularly useful and detailed as are the FAQ in the forum.

If you have a copy of Aperture and it's not a question of buying it, then give it a whirl, you may like it.

ETA. there is an Aperture users group here on DPC (although somewhat inactive recently!)

I capture images in RAW format. I work directly on the RAW images. The software above allows me to do everything I want to do with the photographs.

Have a Mac over here and hate it. Coming from a Linux background it was a compromise I made with my wife when we purchased a new computer. Love Aperture but hate the hardware; no modular upgrades. Refuse to use a Windows box, which leads to the question.

Is anyone out there running Lightroom through Wine?

Aperture, I've had it since the first release and now I'm way too invested in it to switch. The early versions were particularly slow but it's much better now. Once I developed a system for cataloguing my shoots I find it has really improved my workflow.

I shoot RAW so it's perfect for doing all the global adjustments like exposure, saturation, colour balance etc but I use Photoshop for all my spot editing, I find the spot editing tools in Aperture rubbish in comparison.

Never used Lightroom so can't really offer any comparison.

I use Lightroom, I tried Aperture for a short while but I think once you are totally used to one it's dificult to make the transition, if I'd started with Aperture I'd probably be using that now, both are good.

The joke is exactly that. It's hard to tell if I'm joking or not. Actually it's not true, but I was riffing off the Apple Publisher hub-bub where the EULA talked about owning the rights to works written with their software.
