Has anyone come across this before? Bought this happy snapper in Oct 2011 as a carry around to take cool photos of my boy. It was great for a couple of months, then refused to charge and one time brought up the message 'battery exhausted'.

Into the manual, this is not good. New Battery. Again, great for a couple of months (not of heavy use)then... nothing. Not even a Battery Exhausted message. I have contacted Nikon who have offered to look at repairs (no idea of cost etc) but thought I would find out if anyone else has had a similar issue / has ideas etc?

Thanks all!

Quick question: when you are charging it, are you taking the battery out to charge, or does the camera charge with the battery in the camera via a cable?
If the latter, I'm wondering if the contacts are dirty? That might fool the camera into thinking the battery is completely dead.

ETA:
A little more information:
Some others have reported a similar situation. What may be happening is that the battery gets discharged below the point where it is recognized by the camera. In such a situation, it may be difficult to get the battery to charge again. What's worse, it means that something in the camera is draining it, even with the camera off. If you can get Nikon to look at the camera, it may be wise to do so.
I have a similar issue with my very old Coolpix 995, so I just remove the battery when I store it, and that works for me. I can't complain as the camera is 11.5 years old.

Usually I buy only SONY .
This last trip 2 USA , my Dad exciddentely bought NIKON (he has no clue in cameras & always trust the sales-people) .
From day 1 , I knew that shit low quality is not even close to SONY - the BATTERY EXHAUSTED message appears DAILY & I barely used this camera .

Only to send it back to USA & back , will cost me more than the camera cost .
Nikon - no thanxs , still remaining with SONY ... only .

It happened with me yesterday with my Nikon Coolpix S5100. I guess the battery got discharged below the point where it is recognized by the camera. I rubbed the battery with my hand to warm it a little bit then I was able to recharge it again. Hope it works with you... Good Luck :-)
