500px - official get me on the front page thread

This one I uploaded this morning seems to be getting attention on its own!

96.3 after 5 hours, and without DPCers (I think!)

Anyway, this one has potential to reach the front page!

I have to figure this place out...so where do most people who I don't already follow know see the shots? Where is the (welcome) attention coming from?

ETA: Thx Margaret...yes, your right, Publish does have an option to reduce, and actually worked very well for me this morning.

To be honest I think 500px may have some paid people to boost the initial standing (?) This would be to encourage people to become Awesome (pay annual subscription) but I don't know for sure. I have put all my photos that reached 95+ into one set (//500px.com/MargaretN/sets/rated_95_). The common elements are - mountains, fog and sea. I haven't done as well with any other type. I think people check Fresh in specific categories but there must be a high noise-to-signal ratio doing it this way. There is also the self-feeding Upcoming - if a photo does well initially more people notice it. But the most important is to build up your Followers. I think some of the commenters do it to advertise their own images ("voted, visit my profile" style comments).I thought you have many great images in your DPC portfolio, most of those that do well at DPC do also well at 500px. Maybe try these:

I also think it is a good strategy to enter one photo per day or every two days. And hide the ones that don't score well. I have only one page of photos on the main page. I think few people venture into second and third pages of older photos. I use Sets and Profile for collections, the main page is only for the new and the highest scoring photos.

Quick question seeing as this is a relatively recent thread: has anybody actually made money from this site? Either directly (from the site) or indirectly (eg. someone saw you on the site and contacted you for a shoot.)?? I'm extremely curious - thanks.

when i was more active several months ago it seemed that you were first placed on the fresh list, then after 3-4 votes in some short amount of time you were moved to the upcoming list. i believe the placement was by number of votes if you were receiving them regularly. after 6-7 more votes in "x" amount of time then you went to the popular list in rank order usually way down the list, then slowly moved up as you gained "affection".

I had two images in a set receive a score without a vote. Strange. Here it is, some of may have seen it here in he film thread.

Well I made it to 98...then the midnight hour struck and my score dropped to 86 or so.

Still a good reception for the image. I think I made page 7 with it.

@Ben - I think you got a score because you have a favorite for those images, even though there's no votes.

I just realized that you have already entered two of these but they were uncategorized and I thought the crop of the thumbs could be better.

hope you dont mind the critique. i would love to see that one reprocessed. i honestly didn't see the balloon until after i examined the image for a while. it just gets lost above the person's head, i dont know if some selective coloring would work or a different crop, but you need to bring out that balloon more and make it the focus.

for some reason, last night and today, my raining skittles image is getting lots of comments and faves from people who aren't following me. not sure what is setting that off unless its a chain reaction...

Yes, and when I first joined I just put a bunch up which almost guarantees they don't get "full marks" or attention.

But how do you change what's in the crop that it shows...I didn't see anything for that.

Maybe it's an editor's choice? Or people are just catching it in the favorites of someone else?

i checked editors choice, its not there, its must be a chain reaction after being in someones elses flow.

Go to Organizer and hover over the image, click on Edit. You'll be able to create a custom thumb in the Edit.

I posted my Empty entry to my library last week, transferred it to my profile today. I don't see it in Fresh. Transferring from Library to Profile makes it public, correct? Can you folks see the image in your flow or under following?
