A still life (plural still lifes) is a work of art depicting mostly inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which may be either natural (food, flowers, plants, rocks, or shells) or man-made (drinking glasses, books, vases, jewelry, coins, pipes, and so on). With origins in the Middle Ages and Ancient Greek/Roman art, still life paintings give the artist more leeway in the arrangement of design elements within a composition than do paintings of other types of subjects such as landscape or portraiture. Still life paintings, particularly before 1700, often contained religious and allegorical symbolism relating to the objects depicted. Some modern still life breaks the two-dimensional barrier and employs three-dimensional mixed media, and uses found objects, photography, computer graphics, as well as video and sound.

I like that definition, at least it's more liberal than some out there.

*sigh*...maybe I should buy Ryan's 5D Mark II, it's got some good ribbon karma! Problem is, it only works well when shooting sports or wildlife :-)

my yellow has risen: four point one.

Bam bam! Two fours in a row following a 9.

There were some nice morning voters, but the early afternoon crowd not so much. Last several votes have brought me down .3 points :(

I think this will be my Personal Best Brown.

Oh well. I had low expectations.

Don't you get hoodwinked by that young fella my dear... he just uses that as an excuse to get you to follow him into the woods.

Trust me, Uncle Raymee knows of these things.

Don't you hate it when you think you have a super duper shot, but not everyone else thinks so. I think we all suffer from that delusion.
Well I started really well
3 votes 7.33
4 votes 7.00
Then the decline, hovered around 6.40-6.50 for the next 15 or so votes then, reality set in, now wake up to a flat 6.00.

4 comments, 3 nice, 1 meh.

How do you not get excited about a shot you think will do well, but then won't even go close to the top 10...I'll work it out I guess.

I'ts not the end of the world...yet!

Well, obviously a lot of people agree with you -- that it is a very good shot. Some people just don't get it, or are looking for something different. Be happy that you have validation from people who don't even know its your shot.

Lol....same with me. 5 comments now, score went up slightly since I awoke this morning. Still nowhere near top 10.

A reminder: You should not discuss specific images or even a class of images during voting. If you say "Images of XXX don't meet the challenge IMHO" the possible effect at this point is to influence voting, which is against the rules.

We should save discussion of the images, and groups of images until AFTER the challenge. In fact, we don't do enough of that. It's great in the image comments themselves, but it would be good to see a discussion AFTER each challenge ends.

I don't think discussing "classes" of images is disallowed.

We get numerous complaints about this and we've (SC) discussed this and posted reminders before. When you discuss a class of images, you are singling out entries...just multiple ones. Either as good or bad, it can influence voting, and we've agreed to discourage and or remove such posts. We prefer that we don't have to watch the threads and would prefer that people just are sensitive to the "keep an open mind to other interpretations of the challenge topic." rule and keep their own interpretations to themselves during the voting stage so as not to influence others.

We have discussed clarifying the written rules as well, but there is always room for interpretation...they will never be complete or air tight.

Congrats... and with my eyes and (1920x1080) monitor, it was sooooooooooooo small that the differences weren't apparent. :)

Hehe, I know that feeling. It is rare when I get geeked up at the announcement of a challenge because I know exactly what I want to do, then capture that image just as I saw it in my mind. Submit knowing that it had all the elements to do well and......5.5.
I have no problem getting a much worse score with an image I know is not in step with the aesthetic here, or ones that are on some level provocative or offensive, but to submit an image you are sure is right down the middle and end up getting a "Meh" is pretty dispiriting.
