It's that time again... time for the 6th Annual DPC Rickett's Glen GTG! We have had a lot of fun with this location in the past, and a couple folks have asked me about plans for this year... so let's get planning! I'm setting the date for June 3 for a couple reasons... first, this was the same weekend we did the trip last year, and it was great to have a nice water flow, and hopefully decent weather. Second, it was pretty much the ONLY weekend I had available...

Post a note here if you're interested in attending, and if you can commit to bringing something for the picnic, I'll also keep track of those items so we can all plan accordingly. I'm looking forward to it -- my friend Dave had a blast last year, and he's psyched about going back, too. We'll also likely do a TGI Fridays gathering the night before.

ATTENDEES:
alanfreed Wife's famous brownies, grill (compliments of Ray from last year!)
Alan's Friend Todd: Buns, condiments, chips, kielbasa
duk Burgers
RayEthier (Possible attendee)
Sceneit
Stiger Paper plates, cups, napkins, chips, cookies
Nikolai1024 Hot dogs & buns
pgirish007 Buns, & "other things" :)
TonyT Water, soda, Gatorade, etc.
NikonJeb Not a grill
...You? :)

Here are more details (mostly copied and pasted from last year, which was copied and pasted from the previous year...):

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

We'll officially meet on Sunday, June 3, at 10:00 a.m. at the Visitor's Center at Rickett's Glen. I (and duk) will be heading up there on Saturday, and would enjoy meeting any other folks who are planning to arrive in the area a day early. Send me a PM if you'd like to get together on Saturday! The Rickett's Glen Hotel is an economical and very convenient place to stay if you're interested in lodging the night before.

Here's a map of the Visitor Center location:

MISC DETAILS

Previously we have met at the Visitor's Center at 10:00 (which is what I'm proposing again for this year), and we moved a few cars down to the picnic area along Route 118. We started hiking the trail by 11:30, and made it to the picnic area by 3:00. It's pretty much impossible/unrealistic to attempt to keep everyone together for the hike, so I would suggest that we all simply try to meet at the end of the trail at 3:00 to begin the picnic. That has worked out well for in the past, giving us enough time to enjoy the hike and waterfalls along the way.

Last year, we started at the Ganoga Falls fork, and came down the trail... for the sake of variety, we could start down the other side this year, assuming there are no trail closures, etc. (This is all still downhill, no fears about doing the uphill route again!)

This should be an ideal time for us to visit... this date should be early enough for the falls to be in their prime after the winter runoff!

Let's hear from you if you'd like to go... and when you have a chance, please indicate what you'd like to bring along for the picnic!

Sounds like fun. Count me in. I'll let you know how many people and what I'll bring later. Is anyone bring the grill?

I probably have an obligation to bring a grill since I was gifted one from Ray last year :)

Put me down for my usual non-spoilable stuff - paper plates, cups, napkins.

Got my room booked at the luxurious Rickett's Glen Hotel! This time I got Room #3, which has two beds. That means I won't have to cuddle with duk this time.

You might want to ask Neil or perhaps alanfreed. I do believe Neil stayed in a motel in Wilkes Barre, PA which is not that far from the GTG venue, and alanfreed knows the area quite well and could give you some insight as to where you could stay.

Best of luck to you and hope to see you there.

Thanks Ray! I will check with them!

how about "Central Park Hotel"? it says about 10 minutes away from the place?

I've stayed at the Central Park Hotel a couple times for the GTG. It's not bad. It's nothing fancy, but it's a decent clean place to sleep for the night. Last year, I stayed at the Holiday Inn(?) that's attached to the TGIFridays that we eat at in Wilkes-Barre the night before. It was nicer than Central Park, but a little more expensive and a little farther drive back to the park.

Thanks I checked both! Central Park hotel is about 20 minutes from the GTG and Holiday inn is about 55 minutes. working on getting the booking!

I found the Central Park Hotel to be about 10 minutes away from the bottom of the park, so about 15 to the top where we'll meet in the morning. And I thought it was only about 35-40 minutes from Wilkes Barre, but maybe I drive faster than some. :)

My only first-hand experience is with the Rickett's Glen Hotel... but obviously Wilkes-Barre has a ton of options within half an hour of the GTG. Sorry that I snagged one of the last rooms ;)

Shouldn't be a problem Jeb, I purchase two of them last year and left them behind. I do believe that alanfreedsaid he would bring his.
