Recently I saw the movie "The Big Year" with Jack Black, Steve Martin and Owen Wilson and I had a thought about doing something on that but scaling it down a bit. My budget doesn't allow me to travel around the world, let along North America but I thought this would work well if we just did something around our own town or if you happen to be traveling then bonus points...

WHAT IS A BIG YEAR?

The side challenge I am suggesting/holding is going to be a 30 day challenge during the month of April in which you must take as many shots of different styles of birds as you can. No bird in the gallery should be the same and take some time looking up the names of them. Create a folder in your flicker account, Facebook account or even better your portfolio here on DPC ( I know some of you don't have the ability ) but create you an account somewhere that will allow you to host all of your images so others can view them here on DPC.

The member with the highest number of different birds wins... Make sure that somewhere in your gallery you add and update the number of birds in that gallery. That will just make it much easier for all of us to see who is winning this little challenge.

I will also try and keep the scores updated on the bottom of the post when I start that thread.

+ Thanks doremi for this website,

OK, then I'm in!

I'm interested. I probably won't be able to show photographs of more than 150 species, though. ;-)

LOL! I can't get even close to that at the zoo. Maybe 20.

Should be awesome....

WOW 150 hahn??? That's crazy... I was thinking that we would top out around 75-85 or so but I would love to see 150 different species.

I'll start. I can reshoot, if you want to make it April only. This was from yesterday. Appropriately, a wild turkey, Meleagris gallopavo, male.

I love birds... I'm in! I doubt I'll even get to 20, but I'll give it a go.
(as long as they don't have to be GOOD shots of birds!)
03/27/2012 01:44:30 AM · #10
I suck at shooting birds, but I'd like to try.
03/27/2012 02:46:50 AM · #11
I don't know much about birds, but I'll give it a try. 5 must be possible for me. I guess they must be alive?
03/27/2012 02:53:57 AM · #12
I would like to give this a try as I like to shoot birds ( photograph that is) but I don't usually have any idea their names. Time for some homework.
03/27/2012 04:52:30 AM · #13
I'll give it a shot, but will probably be nowhere near 20.
03/27/2012 10:09:48 AM · #14
I'll give this a shot. It'll give me a reason to renew my membership.

Bump

I would like to play along, I think I can probably come up with at least 10 different species. =)
03/27/2012 01:14:27 PM · #18
I love photographing birds! We don't have a lot of varieties here but I'd like to join in. I'll get the usual ducks and gulls and songbirds, but I won't get 30.
03/27/2012 01:18:40 PM · #19
I can probably hang with this one. Our feeders are pretty heavily populated with a good variety of birds.

Sounds great guys, thank for entering this month long challenge.

There is no cap people, we can take in as many people as we like and we have PLENTY of room for you.

Join this challenge and put your skills to the test. Lets see how many of us can hit 50 different species.

I'd like to join. Shooting birds is one of my favorite pastimes ;-) I would like to do only non captive birds and I'll try for at least one different species for each day. @ hahn23 I'll be enjoying your 150 different images! Good luck!
03/27/2012 08:18:49 PM · #22
That's twice I have misread the thread title.

We may have a lot of bird varieties around here, but I rarely see more than a couple of them. I will enjoy seeing this play out though - especially hahn's entries. Have fun.

I saw a bird once. I gather only bird pictures during the month count.

I really want to participate in this, but start my first day of college (again) next Monday. I fear I'll quickly run out of steam. Can you please put me on the very bottom of the list, and I'll toss images in as I find time? :)

Also, check out what I found today on a walk. I was going to start its own post, but I figured it would be less lonely here. I found a wild female Melanistic Mallard. I knew of albinos, but didn't know there was a "negative" version of the condition. I know now! This is a terrible cropped cellphone photo, I apologize. I've seen her twice, so maybe I'll try and find her again in April to get a better shot.
