I am entering as this seems too fun. Is winning a good thing for this challenge?

I'm a little disappointed not to have a lint challenge, but this one's pretty good.

+100000

I don't like minimal editing, but definitely think this one should be basic with no cropping. It's too easy to improve the composition afterwards in advanced.

There is a tradition of randomness in art. It was a favorite technique of the Surrealists. Let the ribbonwinners win their ribbons. The rest of us will learn something about serendipity.

This is one of the dumbest challenges ever. How in the world can it be verified that the person closed their eyes? Sheesh.

Sounds like a free study to me. Basically blink when you snap the shot. Minimal editing would make it feel more authentic.

Dumber than taking a photo of keys?

^ +1!

It seems to be, the challenge here is to not only make the photo appealing, but it must also convince the audience that you did in-fact close your eyes. So inherently, there must be something slightly technically wrong or otherwise abstract in it...

I LOVE where this thread has gone! LMAO.
I needed a good laugh this morning.
And this has done it.

SO WHAT if it can't be verified that the photos were actually taken with the photographers eyes closed.
SO WHAT if people cheat and don't close their eyes... there are liars, cheats, so on everywhere... if we haven't gotten used to it yet, maybe it's time to OPEN OUR EYES and see the truth.
SO WHAT if people edit, edit, edit away... isn't that what usually happens around here anyways? Manipulation of the photograph is some peoples way of portraying "art"

And even better... SO WHAT if people don't like my response/comment/thoughts in this post.

I'm planning on walking around, pointing, then shooting. I'm not going to look through the lens, set up the focus, set up the composition, THEN close my eyes an shoot... that defeats the purpose of this challenge.

But hey, to each their own.

It sounds like an incredibly stupid challenge!!
The 39 steps (or whatever it was ) sounded like an awesome challenge -- look around you world but not where you'd normally look.

Yet still we someone out and out cheat -- go where they wanted and take a winning picture.

The pretty pictures will still win.

But who cares? The people who want can have a lot of fun with this one. I'm going to experiment with a lot of things -- shooting from the hip, but closing my eyes before composing. Can I shoot from the hip without beginning to look at the camera and what direction it's pointing? A great technique to learn.

I'm going to stick my camera on a longer exposure and point in random directions and move.

I'm going to go in a crowd, close my eyes and get run over and take pictures doing it;.

Will my pictures be wonderful? It doesn't matter. I'm hoping for some interesting funky abstract or a cool piece of art.

Celebrate the weirdness, people!! :D

Like Wendy said, shooting from the hip will be fun. How about closinv your eyes and spinning then randomly pointing and shooting, kinda like photo pin the tail on the donkey.

getting RIPPED out of your comfort zone might be a bit painful
sorry darlings, no esthetically high highfaluting monstrosity`s this time
put away your technique
and start having fun

As so many people have already mentioned, this needs to be a minimal editing challenge. Is there any possibility of getting this changed?
03/23/2012 09:46:41 AM · #47
no i respectfully disagree, much as i am craving a minimal editing challenge.

the point here is to point... blindly... then use your eyes to pull something out of your... serendipity.

it's ok to edit after the fact because you are prohibited from all that prep you'd do for a minimal editing challenge, the careful composing, the exposure modifying, the shutter speed etc etc...

No way in Hell are the majority going to actually follow the challenge description and submit something they took with their eyes closed, I'd bet a lot of money on that, lol.

03/23/2012 09:52:51 AM · #49
Though you can technically meet the description with a studio setup shot, I don't think that is in the spirit of the topic. Perhaps the challenge description should have read "camera must be handheld". It'll be interesting. Looking forward to some fun blur shots.
