So Fedex just dropped off two new iPads at my office. I have a busy day going at the office so haven't had a chance to look at them much, but that screen is jaw dropping! This is going to be a great way to view images!

I'm excited about setting mine up more after work. But I'm more excited about setting up the other one I had delivered to be my dear old Mom's first tablet and likely an easy way to check in on how the grandkids are doing on Facebook. Hoping this will be easier for her as she is having a rough time keeping up with the macbook I got her a couple of years ago. Gonna set her up with a Netflix streaming account for it too- gotta' keep granny entertained ;)

I agree wholeheartedly. The only downside is that I have to rework the images I had on my original iPad because I never thought the resolution would go that high. The ones that are high-res look like lab prints.

Your mom will really enjoy the iPad. A couple of months ago I picked an iPad2 as my 85 year old mother-in-laws very first computer. She loves it. Much better choice than a regular laptop or NetBook in my opinion.

Walked into my local Apple Store (Minneapolis) this afternoon. Asked if they had any New iPads. "We have all models in stock." So I grabbed one. No wait. Ten minute deal. I wonder if others had similar experiences of if their stores were sold out.

I have an iPad2 and love it. I also got my mother a tablet pad, though not the expensive iPad, she has a LePan tablet which is pretty nice for $200. She has been so anti-computer all these years, but now knows how to google, email, and loves playing Words with Friends. I hope your mother enjoys her new iPad

My in laws are about to get one. I'm sick of being tech support.

I've been doing nothing but play with mine the last three hours. My iPad that is :)

Looked at the display of iPad 2 and iPad 3 side to side at Best Buy this evening. iPad 3 was slightly sharper and brighter, but not worthy of an upgrade from the iPad 2 IMO. With the prices cut $100 on the iPad 2, I might choose that one over the 3 if I was in the market for a new one.

After I bought my iPhone 4, my old iPhone 3GS screen looked like poo in comparison. I would have expected a similar result between the iPad 2 and the new iPad, so it's interesting seeing a comment saying it's only slightly better, since it has 4x the pixels! I haven't yet seen one in person, and don't plan on buying one for myself since my iPad 2 suits me fine for the moment.

Had never thought about the iPad being good for grandmas. I think we tried to set my grandmother up with a computer several years ago but she didn't like using it, so she no longer has it. Maybe an iPad would be a good solution.

I'm waiting for a dpchallenge iPad app!

The difference is stark if you're viewing anything with greater resolution than the iPad 2 can show.

Don't get me wrong, the display is excellent. Compared to the iPad 2, side to side, it didn't blow me away. Maybe my old eyes have reached their limits.

That or maybe you were viewing images that weren't high enough resolution to show off the new display's potential. I have old and new iPads on my desk, and the difference is readily apparent in sharpness, saturation and contrast.

So I just got home from work and still haven't played with my new toy much yet. But yes, as others have said the screen really shines when you look at a high resolution image. It does however display even the same low-res images better when compared to my iPad 2. Yes I'm a silly upgrader- Slippy can thank me for keeping his stock value high.
Besides the resolution, the color gamut and contrast are supposed to be much better on the Retina screen as well. Images look more like glossy prints with this screen. That said, I can say that most people will be happy to keep their iPad 2 rather than upgrade because it still has a nice display. Unless they want LTE connectivity, haven't tested it on mine yet.

BTW- I was all proud of myself getting two pre-ordered and delivered the first day of release. Apparently all Apple Stores had plenty of stock you could just walk in and order today :P
