Exactly.

I can get radio E-TTL with Pocket Wizards for $200 to use with my existing 580/550/430/etc versus $600 for this new flash.

I just bought my first Pocket Wizards (the new III...it's cheaper than the II!), and I have to agree. PW has been the market standard. It's like Playstation and those UMD movies played in the PSP.

I am looking at the results at ISO 3200 and 6400 in particular and if what I am seeing is really true, I must say they look incredible. I wonder if they did some noise reduction in post too or not. I just don't see much noise at all until it hits ISO 12800 and beyond. Click on each image twice to see higher resolution. With my Mark II, I would not dare to go over ISO 1600. Has canon really improved the ISO performance by 2 full stops with its new Mark III? That is what the first video on this page claims:

They do look awfully damn good. Even up to ISO 12800 they look very clean. Of course, there are no 100% crops to compare, and these samples are downsized quite a bit. I'm really waiting until I can play with some RAW files in Lr. That will tell the tale.
I'm as much interested in the *character* of the noise as the amount. If it's fine-grained and has absent of banding artifacts, it will make me sit up and take notice. I know that Canon has taken some abuse on the 5DII banding, and I'm sure they paid attention to this.

ETA: I'm sure it will be weeks, perhaps a month or more before we really know how good the beast is. At that point I might ping Calumet and see whether they have any good deals going. When I bought the 5D, I got 12 months with no payment, no interest on my Calumet credit card. Spread that purchase price out over 12 months, it doesn't seem so painful!

sometimes you just have to get over pixel peeping and bump the ISO.

I always think a crucial think to remember about noise is how you are going to shoot. Are you increasing the ISO to increase shutter speed (which someone like MattO will do) or are you use the ISO range and noise quality for shooting in the dark? Personally I use the second more often (though shooting football now I appreciate the first as well) and the noise pictures that we get rarely tell the tale because they rarely include a lot of black (on purpose those marketing devils). The earlier posts of the aurora looked fairly good at 6400 but you could clearly see both color noise and luminance noise. Still, it looked as good as 3200 on the Mark II.

Allen while I certainly may have different standards of Noise then you. I shot quite a bit at 6400 and 8000 ISO with my 1DMKIV and at 6400 with my 1DMKIII. I'm currently shooting Nikon and I have to tell you Noise concerns are a thing of the past with pro-sumer and pro level cameras. This is a shot with a 1DMKIV at 5000 ISO and landed in the top 5 of DPC. This is 12,800 with a D3s sometimes you just have to get over pixel peeping and bump the ISO.

Those are super. It's amazing how far we have come in terms of ISO.

In general, I think that rapid price drops from the introductory price are a thing of the past. I remember when the original 5D was released, the price was $3299 USD, and by 9 months later it was more like $2700. The 5D Mk II, OTOH, did not drop in price nearly so much. If you look at street prices at introduction and 6 to 9 months later, I think you'll see that in recent years there has not been a big percentage drop.
Now, if sales are slow (they misjudged the market) then things may be different.

Btw, I just noticed that the original shots are available to download for each image. Under each image after you have clicked on them, there is a link called "original". Just click on it and download the original ones for closer inspection, if you are interested.

Yep, I took a peek at the ISO 100 and ISO 12800 files and compared color channels side-by-side. The 12800 file actually looks pretty darn good. Very good looking noise, what there is of it.
These are JPEGs and there will be some in-camera funny business, though. I will make my final judgment when I can poke at RAW files. Still, damn nice looking files.

Canon is marketing that the noise at ISO 6400 on the M3 is comparable to ISO 1600 on the M2 (a two stop difference). This is an improvement I can appreciate.

It's a marketing "claim".

Image1 is ISO800 and looks noisy to me.

The mark II is a great camera. I mostly use it, with my 500 f4 L IS to shoot birds. For most situations, it has been great. But when the birds get erratic, the autofocus can let me down. Leading to oof images. Unfortunate, as these images are often the peak of action. But alas that old autofocus system! So for me, the mark III looks great! Hugely improved autofocus is a real plus to me. It seems the responsiveness of the camera is improved too. Less shutter lag and black out. Along with 6 fps. Not blazing but nice. I'm a big stickler of noise, sorry.... Usually staying at iso 800 or under. So an added performance in image quality, is another big plus to me.
So looking it all over, I took the plunge and called Henry's. preordered up a mark III and booster. So now it's just to wait. Get the call, go test it out. Then most likely pay for it and take it home.
Then sell the markII. Ahhh, good times....
