Just got the following request for a photo of mine to be used in an ad campaign. Here's the description:

Usage: One year North American use for all promotional, marketing and
advertising in any and all non-broadcast media now known or hereafter
invented (to include but not be limited to consumer magazine, consumer
newspaper, trade magazine, trade newspaper, industrial, point of sale,
direct mail, brochures, and other collateral materials), out of home (to
include but not be limited to billboards, bus shelters, wild postings,
kiosks), electronic media (to include but not be limited to worldwide
web), for one year from the date of first posting.

They would first like me to send them the high res version so they can see if it is high enough resolution for their purposes. That sounds iffy to me with no written agreement and only an email contact.

I have no idea what kind of license fee to ask for. A hundred? Hundreds? Thousands? Any advice is appreciated.

check out this post. there's a link to a stock calculator that should get you close.

if you haven't done so, you might want to go on and register your images with the us copyright office. if it's a reputable company, you should feel safe sending them the high res with the stipulation that it is for evaluation purposes only and that they will be held financially responsible for any unlicensed usages.

good luck!

The ad agency is called "72andSunny". Anyone heard of them?

Curious to see how this is playing out....

I certainly wouldn't send ANY files before getting my money ;-)

That is one huge licence - certainly in the thousands. 72andSunny is a very reputable company - you'll be OK sending them a high res file.

Haven't heard a thing back from them, so either they are still deciding if they want to use my pic, or they decided it's not what they want.

Or... It wasn't really someone from that company and my heavily watermarked high res sample was useless to them.

This is the one they ran across and contacted me about:

Kinda mediocre, IMO. I then showed them this much better one I shot at a later date in more flattering light:
