Post your outtakes from the Best of 2011 challenge here.

Entry:

I had strongly considered this. It has strong personal impact for me. I didn't think it would meet with much more than a meh from the collective, however.

Some people said I should have entered a full colour version of my entry. Would it have done better?

Original entry..

5.2? I'm really surprised at that! I loved the b&w/selective-desat on this (I gave you an 8).

With a tighter crop, I probably would've given the full colour version a higher score than the entry (but I'm just not a selective desat fan lol)

405 entries total entries. Will the outtakes get 100?

My entry:

An outtake (come on, 'best of 2011', who has only 1 outtake?):

I feel my entry is a better photo, but I was worried (as the comments showed) that 800 pixels just isn't big enough to take in the image properly. Still, it's hard to argue with a 6.4, I think a lot of luck would have been needed to score higher than that with any other image I may have chosen.

Well I was pretty disappointed with my score...though happy it stayed above 6 (so not far from my average).

I thought it was my most artsy portrait of the year. Here's my entry:

I had a fair number of good landscapes, but my favorites were used in challenges, and I hadn't edited many more. In the last couple of hours, I started to chicken out of my portrait entry and looked for any that I thought stood out. For some reason I edited a Kaaterskill shot (even though I have so many of them), and in the end I really liked the way it looked 3d...enough to put it in.

BUT I messed up with the new uploader where you upload then submit, and it didn't go in. And before I could fix it, we rolled into the challenge

Here's that shot:

My alternative portrait, which I opted against, was this one.

Probably would have scored better with the Kaaterskill shot, but I messed up by doing it last minute.

Let me know what you think on each. Critical comments welcome of course. More importantly, what was "wrong" with my entry? I didn't get many negative comments, only scores!

The sequence to my entry. I was seriously tossing up between just before he hit the ground & the moment of impact.

I don't think so. Your entry is so much better than the landscape one. Last year I submitted an architecure image and got more or less the score you got this year - well, it is still one of my favorite images :)

My Entry scored 6.061

The one I almost entered

what do you think, did I make the right choice?

Did consider this one though it would have required a bit of tidying up

Two other possibilities:

Think I made the right decision though and very pleased with the result and all the great comments.

Avg (all users): 4.9667

I don't have an "outtake" to share.

This is my 3rd lowest score ever and I wish it was my second lowest. My lowest scoring image is one of my favorite entries.

It seems voters were particularly harsh for this challenge. They were voting on what they expected instead of voting on the actual image.
02/24/2012 11:37:46 AM · #22
i think they voted against other images as a criteria rather than voting on each image individually on its own merits

Outtakes:

Pre-voting phase, friends advised I enter one, or the other, of the outtakes. That was good advice. I changed my mind and entered the aspen color image because of threats in the forums by people who claimed they were going to vote lower on any image they had seen entered before in a challenge. Since my outtakes are similar to some of my best scoring images of the year, I feared retaliation. The forum information turned out to be wrong headed. Next time, I'll take the advice of friends, rather than the blather spewed in the forums.

Here is my heavily processed entry:

And here is the less processed version I should have submitted if using this frame at all. It's still quite busy and might also have not done well. Despite a year of not getting out and shooting much, I expect I had other images I should have considered.

I loved the processing in this image. I thought it was a great shot and prefer it over the less processed version
