This is sitting a full point higher than I predicted. There is still plenty of time for it to hit 4.5xxx :-)

I threw a fun one in here 4.5 lol not much fun actually

Not sure how you interpret this but it's pretty clear and narrow to me

Details: Create one or more letters using any props you like and photograph your creation.

After seeing some of the creative entries, I'm glad I didn't even try this challenge. I had zero inspiration compared to most of these entries. Good job guys!

Seems many of the entries missed the point and I am all for open interpretations but this one is pretty well defined.

Yeah, it seems most just ignored the description and did a found-letter shot. I don't vote 1 for dnmc's, but it does factor in.

If it's the one I think it is, I thought is was a real work of art.

So, leave comments on the images which you think violated the challenge description and explain why you left a lower vote because of that fact. Also, please explain why the particular image does not use the "props" preferred by the photographer to photograph the photographer's creation.

I had fun doing this one. Took a few tries to get it right, but I like the end result.

Sittin' at 6. Figure if I did a better job on the lighting, this would be better.

For the newbie in the room, what does "DNMC" stand for? Do not mind comments? Do not make comments?

"Does Not Meet Challenge"

For example.
I entered this into the sports challenge..

It is obviously not a sport, yet, so people voted and left comments appropriately.

ETA: Everything obviously is left up to your own opinions, imagination and creativity.

It must mean "Department of the Navy and Marine Corps". Can't be "Does Not Meet Challenge" because most images do meet the challenge description is some way, even if remotely. Used to be this site was primarily about photography. Now, it seems that some people scrutinize images for whether or not they meet a very narrow interpretation of the challenge. This narrow interpretation is their basis for casting a low vote, regardless of the caliber of the image. So, the site has drifted away from assessing the artistic and technical attributes of an image ... to looking for reasons to savage the score of an image. It's sort of sick. What makes it confusing is some people enter images which strive for the brown ribbon. It's complicated and your mileage may vary.

Yeah, i think it seems to be getting worse of late, i have a theory that the people that do scrutinize all the pics searching for the DNMC are secretly not very confident in their own photography, bring down them walls guys, its bright and sunny outside with a lovely westerly breeze.

My primary goals are to learn technique, find my voice, and formulate a philosophy around photography. I joined this site because the challenges are nice little projects that motivate me to try different stuff (pardon the technical jargon) and learn technique. I enjoy seeing other people's photos and read their opinions of them and of what they think photography is.

The scoring part of it is a game, and because it's a game people monkey around with it...test the boundaries of the rules, test the tolerance of the participants...game play. I think that's human nature...inevitable behaviour. I don't think the game should be taken as seriously as the art, or rather, I think the art is more valuable than the game. You definitely should not equate your score in the game with the value of your art.
