G'day I'm looking for some editing software for a beginner but without forking out $1000+?
I had the photoshop 30 day trial which I was slowly learning to use some functions on but can't afford to buy outright
something like that.Any suggestions would be great thanks!

Photoshop elements, or corel paint shop pro are both inexpensive and good. Then there's the gimp for free.

I find Adobe Lightroom to be easy to learn. You can't do alot of the stuff you can do in Photoshop, but for basic tonal adjustments, spot editing, and filters, image printing/publishing, it works great. If you participate in the challenges, it seems to be fine for Basic and Advanced rules, but you might want photoshop for expert rules. It is $300 bucks.

I use Corel Paintshop Pro. It is similar to Photoshop, though not identical, and can use most Photoshop compatible plugins. You can get last year's version for $15 at Purplus software or $26 for the Ultimate package

Added: Just noticed you are in Australia. Not sure about availability and shipping to there, but the current version can be purchased as a download. Current will be a little pricier than what I said above, but still affordable.

I certainly endorse the use of GIMP and I'm using Photivo for RAW processing

I like Aperture 3 with Topaz plugins. Don't know if you are Mac or PC.

Lightroom 3 plus Topaz. Very cost effective and I find quite powerful for my purposes.

Paint Shop Pro is what I would go with, if you're looking for something realitevly inexpenisve.

The first software I purchased was PhotoShop (can't remember the version, as it was many, MANY years ago). I am constantly upgrading to the newest edition... User of Photoshop CS5 extended right now (well... as soon as I get my new Mac I will install it).

Anyways... you can also testdrive Photoshop, using their 30 day trial... if it's a platform you enjoy, you can always buy an older edition until you are able to upgrade. :)
