watched my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L bounce on the street...
I died a little today... my camera bag was open somehow and when I went to sling it on my back my lens flew out and bounced off the ground. It looked fine,
but it seems to be toast... it will take a shot every now and then, but then I will get an error about lens connection failing. I guess I will look into sending it in to Canon to get it fixed... poop.
Just wanted to share with people who will feel my pain.

| Now that's no fun. Now there are some valuable personal property insurances that will cover accidental damage like that... |

I think it's done for. You should send it to me so I can use it for a paper weight (after I get it fixed). ;D
I know the pains of repair. At least it's not your only lens.

On the good side you have another almost identical lens and hopefully you had insurance.
Still hurts I know.

Oh my!!!! Yipes - I know the feeling when it happens the world goes slo-mo. Then when the lens/camera hits the ground your heart stops and breathing is put on hold as time freezes.
Hope you can get it fixed soon - the optics sound fine its just the connections that sound like it needs repair. |

I hate it when that happens ... I've had my Olympus drop out of an open bag a couple of times as I got out of the car, contributing (I'm sure) to its current erratic performance -- I have to keep pressure on it in just the right places to get it to stay on, except when it decides it doesn't want to turn off ... :-(

| Same thing happened to me, dropped my 300 L glass with my 5d mk2 attached. Still worked but the body had a cracked case and the lens had broken mount (plus internal damage) Canon fixed them both to like new condition for about $600 bucks, that was a long two weeks though |

It's happened to me before too. I learned to always be careful about closing the bags and securing the opening.
One other thing, if you have a backpack, or bags with zippers that have two pulls on one zipper, be sure to not zip them up with both pulls meeting at the top. They can work open easily when zipped that way. I almost lost a Fuji S3 Pro in the airport at Atlanta while walking between planes.
A good Samaritan who was behind me let me know that my camera was about to fall out from the top of the bag.
It's much more secure to zip them both to one end of the zipper.

I agree with this as I had a similar experience with the pull tabs being at the top of the bag and the zipper working it's way open. |

That's one reason why I have a Flipside Lowepro backpack, it opens on the inside, the part that rests on your back.
How painful, when it's one of your most expensive lens!!

I really can't imagine how you must have felt at the time.. hell I can't even imagine affording that lens *sigh*

Story update... took my lens in to get it repaired last month at a service center here in Germany and was told it could be fixed for 200 euro. Finally got an e-mail last week telling me it was done and ready for me to come pick up. Took the hour drive today to pick it up and... they lost it. Seriously!?! How can you lose a small bazooka? So BITTER! They are going to continue to look for it and send it to me free of charge (no repair cost) if/when they find it.
My question is how long should I give them before I demand a new lens?
I'm so bitter right now... had to stop by my house on the way back to work to give my wife and girls a hug because I was a 150 pound ball of rage ready to explode!
