...there new privacy and policy that will come in to effect on March 1, 2012?

I suggest that anyone that uses Google read the *new* Privacy Policy and Terms of Service and decide for themselves if Google may be going to far.
I'm not saying any of this is Good or Bad however, as an individual that uses Google on several platforms it's something I going to look at closely. What about you?

They are already collecting data, now it'll be shared amongst all of their products that you use.

I trust Google a lot more than most other companies out there.

I'm trying to figure out whether:
a) I care, and if I do,
b) Is splitting my stuff up across multiple companies really going to keep anything private anyway?

i dont get why people are freaking out. Google is using this data to cater ads to you. they are creating some super data base to track you for nefarious purposes. Facebook already does it an facebook has much more access to really private info that Google doesn't.

i for one would rather and would be more likely to click an ad that is related to my interests, other than some random ad that appears.

if you notice a bunch of site do this already. I just started noticing it the more i started shopping online last year that amazon seems to know what I am looking for, based on what i look for on other sites.

Can someone read it for me and summarize here? :)

Sometimes, targeted ads are a bad thing... //www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/11/facebook-targeted-advertising-gay-teen_n_1200404.html

ok, so its an isolated case. The issue in the post you linked stems a little further than targeted advertising and i'd argue that the kid was bound to get kicked out anyway and they are using Facebook as a scapegoat to cover up other issues that were present (hey money makes problems go away, for a while anyhow...)

netflix, tivo, microsoft, amazon any many, many others all use predictive algorithms to recommend content.

where is the uproar that netflix use your history to recommend new movies, or tivo uses watch to recommend other shows, or amazon uses what you purchases or browsing history at to recommend other products you might be interested in. Facebook uses your (and your friend's) likes and interests to target ads to you.

So why is Google, the most successful ad agency ever getting grief over this? when all they care to do is to increase your chances of clicking an ad?

I don't give out much real information about myself, so they can spread it all they like. I even have a special, fake birthday date for online purposes, only the wife knows it. It's great because I get to celebrate two birthdays every year. Unfortunately, I'm twice as old as everyone else.

I'm not sure it's worth freaking out. But for me personally, there are two things different about this from the sites you mentioned:
1) Google has access to my email since I use gmail. No one else does.
2) Google is an impressively sprawling, multi-fingered thing: search, email, YouTube, social networking, documents, calendar, maps, groups, phone OS, photo sharing (Picasa), chat, phone #s (Talk). I'm sure I'm missing some things, and who knows what other products will exist in the future.

Facebook controls, well, Facebook. Netflix and the other sites you mentioned control their own spaces only.

In contrast, Google can combine data from a variety of services in ways never before imagined. It might be that they're only targeting ads, in which case I agree with you: I'd much prefer ads for things relevant to me than random stuff. But there's just something a little nerve-wracking about one company knowing so much about what I do, who I associate with, etc. And given the government's never-ending interest in demanding information from online companies, and the fact that the bigger the data store, the more attractive it is to hackers (who might well break into troves that even their owners never intended to be combined), well ... let's just say that we're approaching the world described in this video. (I work for the federal gov't, and I know how many of us fight against privacy intrusions, but just look at what happened after 9/11).

And regardless of Google's current management's plans, there's future management.

As I said, though, I'm not sure I care. The only thing I might possibly change is to switch away from gmail, which is pretty easy, since I use a domain that I own as my email address and autoforward everything to my gmail account. So I would just switch it somewhere else and no one would need to use a new address for me. But, of course, then I'd be giving up all the benefits of gmail.

Hence my being unsure what I'll do.

Here's a good article that provides a rational approach to thinking about this, and here's Google's dashboard where they show you what they know about you.

Wow. That dashboard thing is kind of scary. Under my web history, it has listed things that were read on the web lately (I'm assuming) and I was reading a story that had a video on msnbc about an architect who designed and built his own house years ago. It caught on fire and while fighting the fire child porn was found in the walls/ceiling or some such. Anyway, to make a long story short, the way they list things makes me look like I was watching child porn... Now, that's freaking scary.

Exactly. And, it's certainly not the last news video I watched. I tend to watch videos on the news channels on a daily basis. So why did this one stick?

eta: And, will I start getting ads for it now?

Since Google sent me an email about there new "Policies & Principles" that will take effect on March 1, 2012, I have been reading up on them.

The email that Google sent to me goes to the current version of their Policies & Principles. Make sure you click the Preview tab to see the version that will take effect March 1, 2012.

Several things you need to do to delve deeper into their new policy, make sure you click on every link highlighted in blue to go to another portion of their new policy. Then click on every link highlighted in blue under those sections.

I found a page that showed a list of sites, terms, and nations that the government have requested Google take down.

There is a lot to read and they do collect a lot from people, not only people with Google accounts, anyone!

I understand that they can get your location when you signup with Google with an android phone but why would they get your location or want your location if you do not have an account or have a smart phone. Deep within their terms it stated that they can get your location by cell tower triangulation when Geo-location is not available.

I'm going to install a wired phone in my home and ditch the cell, lol! I hate all the Google crap that \"comes loaded\" on everything and the fact you cannot easily get rid of it!

The whole \"target ads\" crap annoys me! I don\'t want to see stuff I have not researched and find it all cluttering and greedy! (I must be getting old!) The fact that they think they NEED this information (to propel earnings for major corporations) is the easy way out and it all boils down to the almighty dollar!

Once I figure out how to use Yahoo to search on my phone/tablet...I\'ll be switching from the pre-loaded Google! Meh!

Got the email. I'm not a lawyer, so let's hope for the best. And about locations: I'm not afraid that Google knows my location, I'm more afraid that people believe that Google knows my location. According to Google Latitude (just trying out) I traveled several miles to get a cup of coffee. In reality, I just went to the kitchen :)

LOL! I was scoping out the location for the landscape at night challenge, but it rained both nights I was able to go. It's actually the highest point in south Jersey and used to be a skiing "mountain" when I was a kid. But Trump recently bought the place and privatized it.

LOL

Honestly, I see your point that there is a use in making our location known.
I think that's one of the cleverest sites I have seen in a while:
