Did you know that the cost of pilfering is added to the cost of most items on the shelf?

Trust me, it is not the corporations that end up paying for theft ... it is each and every single customer.

But the distinction remains. And then there is the cost of terrorism ....

Well that is one massive pain in the tutu that I am currently dealing with. I even had to provide the keys for a previous version before I could install a new upgrade that I had just paid for. You would think that since I purchased them from the same location that they would have a copy of it on file.

I feel your pain.

LOL

even if you do start out pirating the software theres a point when and if you go pro it becomes a tax write off and you end up buying it. they aren't loosing anything actually they are gaining customers by making it so easy to pirate y do you think they haven't changed it.

To be honest, even if they would put much more effort into protecting their software, somebody would manage to bypass it anyway. Autocad and the like have since a long time adopted hardware keys, and still they didn't obliterate piracy.

This said, I perfectly agree with you. Nobody gets experienced without practising and, while now some uni will give access to PS, my guess is that most professionals in the world learned as amateurs with pirated software. And got into companies already equipped with a wealth of skills, to no cost to the employer. Which then shelled out for adobe software.
So, you are perfectly right, I think, that this ends up boosting adobe income, not the reverse. I know a few people who told their employers "if you want X, I can do with elements and Gimp, if you want Y, we need adobe and the full suite". And employers obviosly want Y, it makes them more money, and they are anyway paying 20 times that amount each year for the wage of the designer..

Where I draw the line is when your work makes money for you or for someone else (e.g. you give images for free to a charity, and they use them to boost donations). Tha point is time to pay and use whatever you can afford.

its should be noted that unless you are doing some major editing or digital art, elements will suffice for almost any photographer, and that price tag doesn't justify pirating.

+1

Also considered that some PS features are disabled in element and can be unlocked, I just discovered (good news):

From this article.......

'There is no shame for hyperbole amongst the IP Barons, the most obvious example of which being the utterly unsubstantiated 'piracy funds terror' tale. Even amongst the main promulgators of the story there is little consistency here: Jack Valenti, head of MPAA, has publicly linked piracy and terrorism, claiming that funds generated from pirated films support terrorist activity. But at a 2003 hearing of the U.S. House Judiciary Committees on the links between terrorism and the illegal trading of copyrighted material, at which Valenti was present, neither he nor any other of the industry witnesses felt moved to make any such bold claim. Instead, there were the usual complaints about college students using peer-to-peer networks and other governments sanctioning copyright violations. Of course, the small matter of fact doesn't prevent the industry propaganda machine from associating itself with good fight of the War on Terror. A 2004 Federation Against Copyright Theft advert seen in cinemas in the UK shoved a hot branding iron in viewers' faces while brazenly declaring that 'piracy funds terrorism' and that 'piracy will destroy our society.' Many viewers complained to the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA), who upheld the statements. '

I`ve never subscribed to this - I mean, the whole idea of Piracy is you get something for free, not buy it off some Chinese guy down the local boot fair for £5. If you are going to pay for it, get the original. People who pay for pirated software/movies should be ashamed of themselves when it is so freely available on the interwebs.

Umm, thats if I pirated movies and such.

Sorry, don't feel the shame.
Now, not that it's your business ( I could have deleted the relevant meta data from my pic's with programs but choose not to), I downloaded CS5 for try after I bought and worked with Photoshop elemnts 10 - I wanted to see what I miss by working with elements 10 (without NIK and Topaz addons available).
I don't see why I should feel shame for it since it's the same as trial version, I'm not going to use it more then testing it.

Than it's a very good one!!
Actually, it's a true story what I wrote - I really wanted to test those programs after seeing some amazing works here (truly talented artists here).
I can't see why I should pay this amount of money just for trial..
Anyway, good one indeed.
(Trial version is OK, right?!?)

(edit - OK, point taken. If I want to participate in some thread, I should read it from the very beggining.. for this , indeed, shame on me..)

Well, take a picture of me now. Without photoshop, you'll have the blue.
