Indoor Macro Shot
01/18/2012 07:55:23 AM · #2
FYI (because I almost forgot to look), this is basic editing which means no image stacking for greater depth of field.

Yes, as long as it's done to the whole image. No selective editing is allowed.

Yesssss. I actually did this and then had to re-edit my entry because I saw the basic editing. Phew.

Interesting that this challenge comes up soon after I started participating again, and my entry in the last indoor macro shot did very well (7th place, Americas Pastime) which incidentally I found a print I had made and framed it yesterday. I am happy with my entry for the current challenge but don't like it as much as that one, so I don't expect to do as well.

Good luck to everyone,, love looking through macro shots and taking them.. I will enjoy voting :)

I have my entry in and hopefully others will like it.. :)

I'm excited for voting to start...this is my first entry. Not expecting it to do super, but I'll be very happy with a 5 (Sorta expecting a 4.xxx though).

Good Luck Andrew! I remember my first entry, and I still wear out the update button every challenge like it is my first.
(I didn't mean to sound like I've been here for a while, cause I haven't... Just sayin')

Is shallow depth of field a bad thing with macro? I've actually never done macro photography before, and I thought I'd try my hand at it.
01/24/2012 04:25:13 PM · #14
I think it depends on how you use it. It could help or hurt the image.

Personally, I think a little DOF always creates a little interest.

I'm hoping people will count mine as a macro. Even I would call it more of a close up than a true macro, but after recently changing to a Micro 4/3 system I no longer have a macro lens to get really close. I should probably fix that...

I just entered my shot, very pleased with it personally, which means it will do badly. :-)

I just can't wait to see what images actually qualify as "macro" (i.e. 1:1 or greater magnification). Very very few images i've ever seen in these "macro" challenges truly meet the definition, and even more rare that the true macros place in top 5. I hope I get a chance to participate! I love looking at tiny things all huge!

I must recant, some true macros HAVE won ribbons. My bad!

In regards to bdshort's woes, you can make a macro lens out of any ordinary lens by reversing it, typically the shorter focal length the better. I have an old FD 28mm lens, I cut the center out of a body cap for my camera and glued a filter (broken, I knocked the filter out of the housing ring) to it. The filter threads match the lens, the body cap matches the camera, voila! instant (nearly) macro lens! I chose an FD lens because it gives me the ability to manually control the aperture by using the aperture control lever that normally interfaces with the old canon bodies, pentax lenses will work this way as well I can't vouch for old nikon glass. I get just shy of 2x magnification on my 1.6x crop APS-C sensor. The other option would be extension tubes, both are far cheaper than a true macro lens. Truth be told, the quality of a dedicated macro is not quite there, your working distance is absurdly close (less than 6 inches) and you have no on-camera focusing, but it does work you just have to be extrememly patient and steady. I also recommend an off-camera flash (wireless or tethered) if you plan on using apertrues smaller than f/8 because otherwise the images can be extremely dark and the on-camera will not illuminate your subject without casting a lens shadow upon it. As with any other macro, you will be plagued with an insanely shallow DOF, margin of error is less than 2mm. Is it worth it? I think so. Do I want a true 100mm macro? Damn straight I do.

After a long time I'm in. Last challenge was in 08/2010. I like my current photo, but not sure how it will go. I'll try to keep away from DPC until the end of the week.
01/24/2012 09:24:47 PM · #22
I keep changing my entry. I have 2 of the same subject that I personally like but can't figure which one is better for DPC. Arrrgh. I have images in 3 challenges at once which hasn't happened in a long time for me and it's stressing me out which ones to enter as I shot a lot that I enjoyed this weekend. I feel I have a chance at a decent score in this challenge. I'll need it to make up for the low score I'm predicting for the SOPA challenge. Trying new things is tough.

155 entries. I never do good in high entry challenge.

I've also noticed a trend of beating myself up over images also. Water off a ducks back. Water off a ducks back.

Well, I'm pretty tolerant of challenge descriptions. But, one would not observe a duck's back indoor, would one?
