I know it will be almost impossible to get, but at least I can try: a GTG in Italy in March? We could meet in Rome (I live at 200kms from there) or in my region and then go to Rome. My region is wonderful - sea and high mountains are very close - 50 kms. And here in my town there's an airport where start flights towards some important cities like London, Frankfurt, Paris, Oslo and Eindhoven.

Where in Italy are you, Alessandro?
01/18/2012 12:45:02 PM · #6
I'd dearly love to join you in my favourite part of Italy (I had a wonderful holiday in Abruzzo which is I know where you are located), but sadly March (nor April) I cannot do due to a wide variety of reasons.

I'll watch this thread with interest though.

Yes, I live in Pescara, Abruzzo. We're unfortunately well known because of the earthquake that hit L'Aquila in 2009 killing more than 300 people.

Pescara is on the Adriatic Sea, on the same line of Rome.

@Salmiakki: where have been here? In which place exactly?

ETA: we could do the whole thing in April, this is not a problem :)

Hope to make it one of these days. Don't know that it will be this year - already too many things going on. We were in Umbria (Orvieto) a few years ago and LOVED it.

Umbria is great and not so far from here. I could bring the all of you to Castelluccio di Norcia one of the most beautiful places not only here in Italy :)

I would love to go...I love Italy....such a nice place...However I can't afford a trans-ocean flight and a stay in Rome...Plus I have no vacation.

I'll be in Venice next month for the Carnival but if you guys are going to get together in Italy why not wait until the weather gets a little warmer and what better place than somewhere in Tuscany? Sienna first then head over for a drive on Crete Senesi to photograph those beautiful rolling hills with a lone tree/villa on top. Cap off the day with a nice dinner and wine in the Chianti region. Is anybody drooling yet?

I prefer Umbria (not as touristy as Tuscany and Umbrians are very nice people), Orvieto is divine, Piano Grande heavenly (Castellucio di Norcia) BUT it is a year too early for me

Umbria is also beautiful and still very Tuscany like. Can't go wrong with that. Rome is about the last place I would pick though. Alessandro what were you thinking??? ;)

Both Siena and Crete Senesi in Tuscany and Castelluccio di Norcia are wonderful places. My region is not as good but has wonderful landscapes, little villages (Scanno is known all over the world for the images of great photographers like Cartier Bresson and Giacomelli), mountains and sea and above all, here you can eat very well and it's not not very expensive to stay here.

A few examples from my portfolio:

Camposto Lake (very well known place for landscape photographers)
Ripari di Giobbe (I know, here you can't see a lot of landscape - so you have to trust me)
Fossacesia
Vasto
Rocca Calascio - They shot here Lady Hawke and very close here The Name of the Rose. There's a huge and incredible plateau where they use to shoot videoclips, commercials etc.
Torre di Cerrano
Anversa degli Abruzzi - Castrovalva (the painter Escher lived here a few years)
Ortucchio Lake

I'd prefer March or April because summer is my busiest period of the year and in August my family will have a new arrival ;)

I'll keep my eye on this thread. Would love to visit Italy again, but not sure this is my year to do that.
Later rather than sooner for a meet would be good for any who might hope to be able schedule far enough in advance to get a free flight using miles.

I would certainly be interested, but the timescale may be too short to sort anything out - not sure if I would be able to book annual leave or not.

Guys you're definitely right, it's too early in 2 or 3 months. I was very excited at the idea and didn't think of the very short time.

But if you're interested in it we can go on organizing it and choosing the best period for everyone.

Watching and thinking :) I prefer a later time also. September? Definitely not June, holidays in Ireland!

I think the best period of the year is spring because I work A LOT in summer. So I think I'll be able to organize it in March or April next year, so everyone will be ready to come here :)

I'll keep you informed ;)

Too early to list people now but keep writing here

As Brent said some months ago, people coming from a very far country should plan this trip a lot of months before. I was thinking of next March. What do you think guys?
06/04/2012 12:06:44 PM · #25
I think we should do it before 21 december 2012!!!
