and not even a mention of time, training or pstd! I'm serious. Well, OK, I just threw in the stress disorder for personal and frivolous reasons.

Very good however, he seemed quite accurate with his prices until he came to PS - maybe he is looking after an offsite backup copy for someone?

Good point, well made (I was half expecting him to say he lost everything).

I am so far away from ever earning money for my shots that I don't really think much about this. But what he says seems very logical. He seems to have impressed others with over 11,000 Facebook Likes!

Soo.... The next photo taken will be free, since the photographer amortized all costs against the first image. ;-)

I fully understand the desire to protect one's work, and heartily agree. However, if I took that attitude towards everything, it would cost him $3,500 to borrow my lawn mower. If you do not want to trade your work for credit, that is up to you. But I see it the same way as the lawn mower. If you don't want to, politely say no. You do not owe it to anyone to trade work for credit. But at the same time it is not a grievous insult for someone to ask. On the other hand, taking another's image and saying you've made it right by giving credit is no better than stealing my car, taking it joy riding, and then saying thank you when I catch you.

It certainly would not be the first time... And likely not the last...

I support and understand the desire to protect one's work. No matter how good or bad my image may be, it's mine. I can decide to share for free, or not. Solely my choice. I don't care whether it was shot with a digital Hasselblad, or an Instamatic. Equipment cost does not enter my equation. An image belongs to its creator, and the creator gets to decide when, how, and if it will be used by others.

I just feel the author was a fair bit arrogant. One, of my many, personality flaws is that I tend to poke at people who seem arrogant to me. Do I have that "right"? No, that's why it is a flaw. But I tend to do so anyway.

I may still be missing the point... But isn't that why they make guns that hold lots of bullets? ;-)

nice way of putting your ask!!!!!!!

Bad analogy... Guns with lots of bullets are for people who miss. Points and targets don't really correlate well.

Essentially I took another shot at getting the point, or at least a closer understanding of your understanding of the point.

...or with lots of enemies.

Aside from the fact that anyone with basic understanding of photography could recreate that photo with a $200 point and shoot or maybe even an iphone, he sounds like the sort of guy who wouldn't be comfortable in lending his lawn mower to a neighbor without charging them for the priveledge.

By the way this post cost me $2000 to write, as that is what this computer cost. so don't even think about copying any words from it.

÷~20,000 pictures, so the photo costed ~$.33
or if you divide the % of time he uses his comp for things other than photography, or if he has taken more than 20,000 pics on his camera...

There is also his time to take and process the image, the cost in getting to the location etc etc....what the author was saying is that if the client had to reproduce the image for their needs then that is what it would have cost them!

But it is the point in general...the ones who think they can use other peoples photos for free just don't seem to think about what it took to take that photo and how they should reimburse the owner....they just take it for granted that it should be available to them for free. I see it happening everyday and it peeves me off.

And sunset images are a dime a dozen. Maybe 20c from a Microstock site?
