I have a D300 right now and I want to go FF. Should I wait till the D800 comes out or buy the D700 now. When the D800 comes out the D700 prices would most lightly drop in price. Not sure what to do.

First and foremost, consider what your budget is. Second, decide how long you can wait for the D800 to come out. It's been "rumored" to be "coming" for years. Eventually, it has to, but determine how imminent your "need" is.

I'm waiting, you should also, warning, they will be hard to get at first, you may have to get on a waiting list, behind me of course.

I'm waiting. My guess it was due this year but with the problems their plants had in both Japan and Thailand things likely got pushed back a year. Hopefully 2012. I'm mainly looking for greater low light performance and the rewards of FF when shooting landscapes and portraits so we'll see what they do with the D800. If they just cram more pixels in then I may then buy the discounted D700, assuming I can find a new one.

Also waiting. I don't think it can be long now.

The big difference to consider in my opinion, is do you want or need video. The D700 does not have video. That to me is one of its primary good or bad features. Good to me. I missed the D700 at $2399 and resent it now priced at $2699. Problem is, even at $2699 it is easily the most bang for the buck out there. Sadly adding a battery grip and battery spares, it pushes 3 grand or a little more. Add in another lens (who doesn't need another one of those) like an 85mm f/1.4 and you're up another grand to 1500. At $4500 you're only a few bucks from a D3s so...

Not sure how much the prices will drop with the introduction of the 800. Probably not much. Even if they went back to $2399 or even $2199, its only a few hundred less than now. In the big scheme of camera gear - when one is dropping thousands on equipment, scarificing the joy of owning one now hardly makes sense - at least to me.

Now where's my wallet??????

glad that I don't have this dilemma. Very happy with my d700. As long as it works (knock on wood), it is the first time when I don't feel any particular need or desire to upgrade. Quite enough camera for my needs.

D700 was $2199 at one point? WOW!! Hope the D800 will be out soon. Anyone know how much the D800 go for?

Newest info on D800

Nikon Rumors

Yes, and when you do tell me how amazing it is so that I shame myself into saving for one as well... I have wanted the D700 for a long time, chose to get the 70-200 f/2.8 over it last time I saved up though. Get it!

I love mine. One of the things I particularly like is the large bright viewfinder compared to cropped sensor cameras.

If you're going from D300 that's about the only upgrade you'll get (full frame). I would advise waiting for the next iteration (D800 or whatever), see what extra features it has to offer, see the price, and see how much the D700 falls at that point, then make your decision.

Like Lev, I adore my D700. Upgraded from a D90, which I also love. If I wanted to do video (which is never), I'd use the latter. The rumored specs on the D800 show a massive pixel increase (which may or may not be good), and dual slots (which is fabulous); ISO is about the same. Don't know that I'd "upgrade" just for that.

D300 to D700 ISO Difference is huge due to the full frame sensor. Just one article about it. . .

Is it just me that finds 36mp sorta depressing?

Nope. I'm trying to decide if I want a D700 now.

I know I want one. But wanting and Affording don't always cross paths immediatley :) By the time I can afford a D700 the D800 will be in used form :)

I'm glad...
I was really considering getting a D700 for its low light performance and pushing it up to 36mp seems sorta silly for me. How many people ACTUALLY use that resolution? It's sorta asinine and I'm wondering how much lowlight capability is sacrificed for it. Hell, I've got an image that I took with my D300 that was cropped some and then blown up to 20X30 and it looks great...
That, and the "expected" price point of the 800 is so far above what the 700 was at debut...

There are some reports that MP's will actually max out at 24 as a usable limit. I suspect that will likely be the case.

My personal advantages to the D700 with battery grip are; No video, high ISO with excellant photo results, weather proof, and a self cleaning sensor - for under 3 grand. Pretty tuff to beat. Is 12mp enough? probably. Would 16mp or 24mp be better? probably. But does anyone need 36 megapixels? probably not.

I'm reserving judgement until the official information is released, so far the specs released are only rumors.

In my opinion you can't go wrong with the D700..I love mine..

I love my D700, and would recommend it to anyone who wants a consistently excellent experience. That said, I do have Nigel Tufnel tendencies and I like it when stuff goes to 11. But even then 36mp is at least a dozen mp too many.

But if it drives down the price of the D700 and gets more folks to grab one and step into full frame, awesome.

I was in the same boat you were with two D300's and wanting to go FX. I saw the 36MP rumors of the D800 and quickly decided that the D700 would be perfect, plus I wouldn't have to buy a new grip and l-brackets for my Really Right Stuff tripod heads. I have really enjoyed the D700 immensely and the low light capability is worth the price. The only thing you'll have to get used to is the shutter click noise is much louder on the D700 than the D300. Good luck making your decision.
