When a person comes on here asking for a membership off someone...well that really annoys the hell out of me.

Christmas will be coming late this year, I am taking the kids to Florida for Spring Break. Disney and Sea World etc... As a single parent this will be quite an adventure lol but am looking forward to it. Now if I can manage to sell my old iMac I may purchase a Canon 85mm 1.8 lens for myself.

Where's the Christmas spirit? LOL! Every year there is usually a thread with Christmas wishes posted and people exchange things. I've had 3 gift memberships this way over the course of my years here during some very tough times in my life. I've sent things, I've received things. I wish I could put my finger on when exactly things became so nasty here that people just jump all over others for posting something.

I have plenty of Christmas spirit - what I do not like is when a person who comes on here very rarely, hardly ever, then thinks it's ok to pop in here and get a subscription.

I have given away plenty of membership gifts in the past to people I thought would make use of them but to be honest they were wasted as several of those people never used them. I can only think of 1 person who made the most of it.

The Christmas wish list used to be a wonderful show of caring. I personally have given many things, and received even more. What happened to that? I miss the list, too bad it did not exist this year.

Yeah, I could do with some of that...... Having owned an SLR now since 1990... I can now confidently say... I know which end of the damn thing to look through :-/

I had a big long response to this, but thought better of posting it so deleted it before hitting the button. Let's just say, this isn't really a happy place anymore.

The joy is in the giving, not in seeing some conditions you've attached to the gift fulfilled.

Every Who down in Whoville liked Christmas a lot, but the Grinch, who lived just north of Whoville - did not. The Grinch hated Christmas - the whole Christmas season. Now, please don't ask why; no one quite knows the reason. It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight. Or it could be that his head wasn't screwed on just right. But I think that the most likely reason of all... may have been that his heart was two sizes too small. But, whatever the reason, his heart or his shoes, he stood there on Christmas Eve hating the Whos. Staring down from his cave, with a sour grinchy frown, at the warm, lighted windows below in their town. For he knew that every Who down in Whoville beneath was busy now, hanging a holly who wreath.

I can honestly say that I've been delighted to give the few I've given out.

As far as conditions go.....yeah, I do that.

I ask that anyone who gets one from me pay it forward and give one to another photog down the road when the time is right to do so.

The nicest part about that is those occasions arise and it feels wonderful to give one to somebody happy to receive one.

Totally agreed. I have given one away and it felt good. I am not sure if it ever really got used. If it did then great, if not, then I still get satisfaction of tying to help. They did thank me at the time but I didn't track them down afterward to make sure it got used properly.

I don't know - look what people did for SDW. I think there was a lot of spirit in that and it didn't even involve Christmas!

I have to agree with Mike - the approach by the OP does make one wonder. However, someone might donate a membership to this one. And one never knows about the ultimate outcome.

I prefer tho to donate to those who don't ask for it. Makes it more of a fun surprise :)

For the most part, people on this site are very generous. I respect that. I like to keep the christmas spirit alive all year.

The thing is, he didn't really ask for it. He just said it was what he wanted. Maybe that post was meant to be seen by his parents, or his friends. Who knows? I could be way off base. English isn't his first language it seems. And he's still young. It just seems that any more people jump to the worst conclusions first.

This is ridiculous. We're jumping all over someone for telling us what he wants for Christmas? As one of the shortest verses in the Good Book goes, "Jesus wept."

Throws hands up in the air. Might as well talk to a brick wall.

I can see both sides of this. The OP could have simply started a thread that could have stated "What is your Christmas wsh" and then stated what he wants which I feel is what he had intended. Unfortunately, I these types of threads have to be worded and started carefully so as to minimize misunderstanding. I have have enjoyed seeing how generous the DPC community is and wouldn't want to be in the way of someone helping someone else out.
