I know a year or so ago a few of us got together and had a mission to help people on the site, well better late then never right?

Each week, for the month of December I will post a couple of photoshop tips that could teach people how to speed up their processing and do some really cool things that you might not have known. Some will be youtube others might be something I just picked up along the way. Feel free to leave comments but should you do something differently or think that something is done an easier way please PM me so I can just adjust my posts and not start an argument in the thread. Any updates I post will be updated as a new post and will reflect in my initial post.

If anyone has ANY questions about any of the tips or maybe something you would like to see a tip on please post it so I can help.

I will link this thread from my profile as well so just in case it gets lost you can find it there.

Enjoy...

Software I'm using:
1. Photoshop CS5
2. Lightroom 3

Photoshop Tips:
1. Create a Real Drop Shadow
2. Non-Destructive Dodge & Burn
3. Skin tones
4. Straighten tool
5. Extracting a Subject
6. Color Profiles - PS vs. Internet

Keyboard Shortcuts: - That I use 99.9% of the time
1. SPACEBAR: Pulls up the handtool allowing you to move your photo around quickly.
2. X: Switches the background and foreground quickly.
3. D: Resets your color swatches to black and white.
4. B: Quickly chooses the brush tool.
5. Q: Enters quick mask mode. Allows me to use white or black to quickly paint or remove sections of a marquee (marching ants).
6. [ & ]: Use these brackets to increase or decrease your brush sizes.

Here is another very good tut on Dodging and Burning. I actually started using this method a while back and it's 10 times better then D&B'ing on an actual layer. Use this technique a few times and before you know it, it will become second nature.

Non-Destructive Dodge & Burn

Recap:
> New Layer
> Blend mode to overlay
> Check the box "Fill with overlay-neutral color 50% Gray"

I will be using both of these

Quite like this tutorial as you can soften/intensity your dodges and burns as much as you want using the opacity slider. Seems to be a little more flexible than the standard D&B tool from my very brief attempts at using PS.

I've actually been using D&B in the overlay with gray, but using the d&b tool. Is there a difference between that and painting? Or just another way to "skin a cat"?

There is a slight difference but it's just another way to skin the cat. Another option would be to user CTRL+ALT+Shift+E to create a new layer with all those below it and use dodge and burn on that layer. It's a little easier to create a layer mask from that and back off if needed.

Skin tones - This trick will help with keeping skin tones to a realistic look.

This is something I use all the time. Here's a couple of extras that work very well with this:

Use layer opacity to back off your effect if you think you've gone too far
Duplicate overlay layer to double up the effect, you can then use opacity on the duplicate layer or even layer masks if you only want to strengthen part of the affected area.
Use a gaussian blur on the layer to smooth out the dodge / burn a little
Use soft light as the layer mode rather than overlay for a slightly different effect
Remember you can apply all your normal tools to an overlay layer, such as masking off areas of the image to control the areas you are dodging / burning into

Just keep remembering it's a bitmap layer and you can do all sorts of clever stuff with it.

Depth of Field - Really try and pay attention to the tutorial here. It is one of the breast videos I've seen in a while.

I love breast video's, but man I usually can't watch them on DPC this is going to be awesome!

OK so I know it's a typo, but how could I resist?

ROFL so after clicking the link I realized it's not a Typo!
