This is what the last 102 or so ribbon winners are using for equipment.

Not sure of what to make of it for your a stat person. I would say several are the same person so it does skew the stats a bit. I am a Pentax user and none are to be found anymore I guess on here....maybe they all got run off or switched to different camera manf. I just find that 30 ribbon winners using the same $1,800 - $1,900 dollar camera.

| A thoroughly worthless stat, but I'm quite pleased to see the "lower end" Canon Rebels accounting for ~10% of the tally. |

| So from this we can conclude that the best photographers tend to have decent equipment. We can also conclude that there's been one "phone camera only" challenge in the last 102 competitions. I think that's about it. |

| When did you start the stat? If it is before March I'm the only one with a D80, and afterwards I switched to D7000. |

It's not the equipment, it's the artist in you.
Past is not necessarily prologue.
That said, I am way out of sync with the current population of voters and their image preferences and their challenge interpretations. It's okay! Art is like that. I'm enjoying my photography more than ever, just winning a lot less these days. |

The interesting aspect of it isn't that "winners use pricey gear"; we already knew that. It's how overwhelmingly the balance is slanted towards high-end Canons, over Nikons...

Total amount of Canon Ribbon winners in this list = 79!
Total amount of Nikon Ribbon winners in this list = 22
I am thinking we finally have some hardcore proof that Canon is clearly the best camera brand ;-)

I used a small Canon (Canon S3 IS P&S) to get the first 4 ribbons this year . Then I was too ashamed when other photographers looked at me in the field so I bought a Big Canon(Canon EOS 600D/T3i Rebel ) to grab 3 more... |

The little cameras are KILLER for macro, huge DOF, much easier to get a decent focus zone. It's no accident all those first 4 ribbons were macros :-) Being good at what you do helps too, LOL...

| Canon wins it, but Nikon still does okay. The conclusion here is that if you don't use either Canon or Nikon, you don't stand much chance of winning a ribbon. So I suppose I should forget about micro 4 thirds. Oh wait, I don't stand much chance of getting a ribbon with my Canon anyway, so maybe changing brands will give me an excuse. |

No, the 'conclusion' there is people who take photography seriously are also likely to spend time looking at what the best gear to buy is. If you give a Sony DSLR to one of the frequent ribbon winners on this site, I'm sure they'd continue to win ribbons.
People should also consider that making observations such as; "wow, 50 Canon's to 10 Nikon's" isn't actually that significant when you consider the statistic represents about 5 users.

interesting. Looking at this great statistic one could conclude that Nikon D50 is a better camera than the Nikon D3x, since D50 won a ribbon and D3x did not.
Also my conclusion is than Canon's new EOS -1D X is a total junk since it still has no ribbon and its been a couple weeks since the announcement by Canon.

I didn't really mean this to be taken seriously. In truth I'm surprised at how few ribbons were won by other brands. |

I picked up 2 ribbons from 7 submissions this year which is close to my average of a Top5 finish every four or five submissions.
Sometime I think about switching from Pentax to Canon just so I can win even more ribbons. :p

my bad, it is 102 ribbons, i.e. only 34 challenges! Then indeed, I only have two :(

Nooo, maybe those who own Nikons are better at shooting at lower ISOs as noise at high ISOs still tend to be the Nikon bugaboo.
Having said that I ribboned with a then-recently purchased D90 and a Sig-for-Nikon w/a lens that I bought from  vikas... |
