I know that this probably happens a lot. But please read the challenge guidelines before making comments that do not fit the challenge and voting a person low because you have not read the guidlines yourself!

Everyday Objects!
Take a common, everyday object that most anybody would recognize and use it as the focal point of an interesting photographic composition.
It does not say that the object is something that would be used EVERYDAY! If that were the case even knives and forks would be out of the challenge because they are not used by everyone everyday eg when you have pizza or eat with chopsticks!

Lets be a little realistic about it!
This is directed at 1 person and I hope he reads it instead of voting everyone down because he does not use the object everyday!

I have to agree with you. I think some people go out of their way to be anal about their criteria....or maybe they are just an a**. I wish one of these threads would be going after a challenge so specific examples could be pointed out. It seems the only time people wish to discuss this kind of stuff is when it is happening. By the end of a challenge, everybody has moved on and are talking about the next one. :-)

Well I have a slightly different take on the Everyday Object challenge, to my mind everyone has focussed on finding an everydy object but very few have satisfied the second element relating to 'an interesting composition'.

There are lots of submissions which don't meet the challenge for that reason. !!

In addition the challenge guidelines in no way say there has to be more than one object... This is also directed to one person and I too hope they see the error in their judgement.

I was guilty of voteing down some pictures for not meeting the challlenge. I have review it now.

This is from another post that I made just a minute ago

Looks like everyday objects in Australia are not the same as everyday objects in the US. I had some comments that say they don't see the everyday object or words to that effect. Or maybe I got all the grumpy voters [that have never entered a challenge by the way ;-{) ].
Maybe if the opened the aperture on their narrow little minds they could see a little clearer. On a brighter note thanks for the positive comments most of you guy's are really helpful.

Maybe we are talking about the same guy! He mentioned it would not be used everyday as its winter there, go figure! He knows what it is, he has one but because he's not using it at the moment it dosen't fit the challenge. Bob

While you guys are complaining about this particular person, you might want to look at one factor of his stats: Avg Vote Cast: 6.9714

I must conceed Chris his average is even higher than yours and my average cast.
Maybe I should have been on the rant thread.....

Interesting... I got a comment from the same person stating that I did not use everyday objects in an interesting composition. Strange, since I think it is clearly an everyday object and the setting, while perhaps not extraordinary, certainly meets the challenge on some basic level. I PMd him about his comment and waiting to receive a response.

I have what is an everyday object in my picture although from what im reading i might be wrong.
Maybe i should have titled my picture what it is cause my current stats are:
Votes: 115
Views: 140
Avg Vote: 4.8087
My wife reminds me that im usually wrong but i thought my photo would have averaged AT LEAST a 5.5.
Once again i am wrong.
live and learn.

Hello. I just joined this site. The "everyday objects" challenge I thought meant more "common" type of objects that may be, but not necessarily, encountered everyday. I think that personal interpretation makes challenge descriptions a bit challenging themselves, thus yielding interesting and not so interesting submissions. I look forward to participating with all you interesting people who share the common interest of photography.

And i thought this challenge was going to be one that the 'fitting the challenge' thing would not come up, being that is a very broad and open to interpretation challenge. Silly me. When will we care more about the picture than the topic?

My initial thought was that "everyday object" lent towards things like plugs, computers, forks, tables, etc... But then I thought that someone who lived at the north pole would probably have a different idea on everyday than someone in the sahara desert. It almost makes this an open challenge as it is individuals interpritation of "everyday object" that counts... I know I have been low voted for being outside the remit of the challenge due to some comments. However other comments have been very usefull.

Had there been an extra word in the title such as "inanimate" or "household" then it would have been far tighter and I would have chosen my initial interptitation.

From the rules:

While voting, users are asked to keep in highest consideration the topic of the challenge and base their rating accordingly.

(emphasis as-is). To me, "meeting the challenge" is always one of the most important aspects of how I rate a photo for the challenge. And yes I realize that in this challenge, there is a room for a lot of things to potentially meet the challenge. But to me personally, there are always ways to really "meet the challenge"... and that is what DPC is all about... meeting the challenge. Otherwise, what is the point of even calling it a "challenge"?

Oddly enough, I got a low vote and a comment from somebody whose account no longer exists. What happens to votes pending when an account is deleted?

I just want to die (happy) now! For those of you who score great all the time, it wouldn't be a big deal, but I just hit 6.00 for the first time ever on a challenge and I am going to enjoy it for the 5 minutes it lasts!!! I got a great comment and chosen as a favorite, too, so thank you to all who have given me kind scores this time! It's fun, even if temporary!
07/30/2004 12:31:26 PM · #23
I am scoring far lower than I expected too, but have only recieved positive comments. I don't know what people are doing, if I can have fully positive comments and yet hover at a 4.7xx I can understand if there were some critiques on the image, or somebody thought it didn't meet the challenge for some reason, but nothing like that is in the comments!

Good on you Kylie! At this point, the Law of Big Numbers is on your side. You might not finish in the top ten, but you'll almost certainly have a good score. Sit back and enjoy the ride.

Thanks! I never take the scores too seriously, but this is fun for the time being! Top 30 would be awesome in my opinion!
