Once again the record for the most world's expensive photo has been broken.

It should score around 5.5 in a FS here on DPC, lol!

I don't get it. And the previous record was held by a photo of shelves in a supermarket.

I'm mounting everything on plexiglass from now on...

It is truly a strange thing.

Clearly an investment buy due to the fact his had been the most expensive photos previously, but what I don't understand is how he got them to be in the first place!

Did you see the comment about the hidden treasure map? ROFL!

One of the comments...

" I mean, I've seen better, more creative, odder, more mundane, less mundane, whatever images, that could be taken by anybody. How does this guy get a photoshopped image of water, grass, sky, path, to fetch four miiilllliiiooonnnnn dollars?

I want to know because I have a hard drive full of images that I need to turn into cash."

How you blind, shallow, philistines fail to see the genius of Gursky's work. Your lives must be so sad and empty. Don't despair. My morning poop is soon to be auctioned off at Christie's, and if you have $5 million it's your opportunity to turn your empty, sad life around.

I don't know, I like it. I think it's interesting. Not 4.3 million interesting, no, but interesting. I'm also a fan of his previous record holding photo, but then, I also like Burtynsky.
Just because something wouldn't score well on DPC doesn't mean it's without value. Some of the images I prize most on here did jack diddly in results. Is that not reason in and of itself to continue?

It's really big in real life.

That's all I got.

Gurtsky's work is BIG, really really big. It really only works on that scale. Reducing it to a 300 pixel image steals all the magic he can create with one of his complex and subtle images.

Sort of like a Jackson Pollock? I always saw images of Jackson Pollock paintings and thought that they were pure crap. Then I saw one up close and in person at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. I found that seeing, in real life, a lot of the art that I thought was rubbish, really changed my opinion*. Although my first reaction to this photo is that it's rubbish, I can see a situation where someone could hang it in a large format.

*My opinion has not changed on solid colored canvases. MoMA has them in solid white (which the artist allegedly took 18 months to "create") and solid black. Or pencil lines. There is still a lot of rubbish at MoMA.

Here it is. Yours for $4.3m

Nope. I'm sure the buyer wouldn't sell it without making a decent profit.

I've just finished viewing the video and right at the end he says that is his favourite photo. I think there's enough there to suggest that the style of Andreas Gursky might make an interesting challenge.

You got that right. 5.5 with luck and benevolence.
One has to see Gursky's photographs to get a feeling of their transparency and monumentality. Cannot be appreciated on our tiny screens.
The technically minded here should be in awe.
He is not one of my 50, let's say, favorite photographers (perhaps not even among the 100 ones) but he started this genre of looking at life with a dispassionate eye.

It would be in the 4s. I am the leading expert on 4s. I have more 4s than FourPointX

Or maybe not hard enough? Sort of depends on where you put your eggs. On this site we award the photos that look difficult to achieve. That's not the definition of art.

I'm doing something wrong...

Frankly, if an image of mine with the same quality sold for that much money, I'd use all of it to fund philanthropic causes, and in that way assuage my shame.

So if you thought your image was a higher quality, then you'd feel OK about it?

In other words, you think it's justifiable that SOME photos might sell for 4 million plus, but not THIS one? Don't you realize how odd that sounds? Simply because, when it comes to "art", ALL value is perceived, not intrinsic; a piece is worth whatever someone will pay for it.

I read an interesting vignette the other day. It was about a world renowned violinist that hung out and played in the subways one day as part of a social experiment. His concerts had been sold out for months, with people paying exorbitant amounts to hear him play. However, in the subways, people rushed by him, *maybe* pausing briefly and dropping a bit of spare change into the case. Small children would almost always want to stop and listen, but were hurried on by their parents. By the end of the day, the amount collected wouldn't even have been enough to buy a cheap ticket to one of his concerts.

It is all about perception.

That was Joshua Bell. Here's a YouTube Video of that performance. Here's the Pulitzer Prize-winning story about it from the Washington Post. Fascinating.
