As we know, DPC is having it's 10th anniversary. There has been a lot of talk about a South Florida GTG so I thought I would start the thread.

Here is the thread that this comes from.

This is literally just the beginning stages so all recommendations are welcome.

What we need to figure out -

Where?
Of course not only what city but where within that city.

What day?
It is a choice between the 14th and the 15 of January. This is Saturday and Sunday.

Who?
Who is available? Not only who is available but who is available for what day?

When?
As we know, January in Florida is not the harshest month to be outside so this should be pretty easy to figure out.

I hope this kicks off pretty smoothly. :)

I'm interested. I currently don't have a preference for either of those days and I could be available for either or both.

Here's the thread for the 7 day GTG that I led several years ago. You can look through it for some ideas about where we might hold this GTG.

To summarize this trip: We met near The Everglades and drove to Key West and back over the course of a week. We stayed in one resort and a couple of motels along the way. We took an airboat ride in The Everglades and, later, rented a boat in The Keys to visit some offshore islands and reefs for some underwater photography also. In Key West we took a fast shuttle to The Dry Tortugas.

I'm not suggesting that we do another 7 day GTG, although it was a lot of fun, but in that thread are a lot of ideas. What is not covered is the metro areas of Miami or Ft. Lauderdale which are also possible locations.

Make all the details work out to be easiest for everyone else, and I can be there. I live sort of south central, so anywhere from Daytona to Key West is ok with me.
Should I bring the melon musket?
The dates are also the dry season and few mosquitoes if we decide to do any nature sort of things.

Would love to make the trip from GA to FL to meet up with some DPCers!

did someone say key west?

actually, realizing the extra 4 hours to get there, probably somewhere ft. lauderdale/miami would make the most sense for all the drivers out there.

Bummer on the timing... I'll be in that region (returning from a cruise) January 8 :) I'd love to meet folks down that way!

Florida in the winter is quite appealing to this Northerner. This GTG goes to the top of my list. I will keep Philly and the Cape Cod gatherings on my radar too.

We are still in the beginning stages so anything is up in the air.

Palm Beach would be really easy for me. Lol.

Well, I may, or may not be in town.... I do live in South Beach now, and it would be good to see you again. :) I'll send you a PM with my contact details.

Heck, if you're coming into the port of Miami I'm betting that I might not be the only one up for a meet-up a couple of days before the bigger gathering.

As far as the OP's idea- I should be in town over that weekend, so I'd say there's a pretty good chance I'd be in..

I can also offer my services as a guide to the Wynwood Art District here.. Saturdays are really busy, and it's a place where a group of photographers wouldn't be seen as too big of a deal.

Oh, and I could provide a day parking pass for the South Beach zone 2 area for up to about 10 people, and I could also make a bit of a guide here if people are into that, although for food and drinks the Midtown area has a couple of really great spots for a group like this to grab food & drinks, which are priced FAR more reasonably than stuff over here on the beach is, parking is also much easier.. :)

ETA: This will be just after Art Basel, which means it might be a really good/bad time to go to the Wynwood area... I think parking could be a nightmare, but the action and fresh art might be really good, they always do a bunch of great new stuff for the event every year.

Cory, is there a safe place to leave cars parked and carpool to the locations?

Keep me updated if you guys are going to meet up. I'm interested.

Hey Waddy, I'll answer for Cory for now: There are surely safe places to park so that we could carpool. From shopping malls to supermarkets, there are places that you could safely leave your car. Some places you can't but I know the difference. You could even park in my neighborhood and ride with me.

If the GTG is going to be in or near Miami, then I may do that if you have room in your vehicle Robert. Since there may be people coming down from northern areas, I was thinking that the GTG might be easier for them if it was in a more central florida location.
The Miami area does have huge urban photo ops. It's not my native territory. I would be comfortable there with a group of city dwelling DPC'ers who can safely navigate the local hazards.

The cheapest solution would be for me to give everyone parking passes for Miami Beach, they cost me $1 each, although I am limited to 10 per month.. Any other option will cost roughly 3-5 per hour. And safe? Yes - very, unless you ride your bike (we have the most skilled bike thieves in the world in South Beach)

I'm perfectly OK with a more central location - the only real advantages here are urban ops and plenty of excellent food/drink options- which I think are equally critical to a good GTG. :)

Wish I could spend some extra time there, but we're going to be bustin' butt to get back to PA. The cruise gets back to Ft. Lauderdale early Sunday morning, and we need to drive back home in time for my wife to get back to work, and my daughter back to school, by Monday morning. We'll barely have time to swing through McD's :)

I'd enjoy getting together with both of you guys, though, sometime. My daughter & I are planning to be in Central FL for a few days leading up to the cruise, but that'll probably be consumed with Universal Studios, etc.

:) ...

We could well do that... Of course, I do have a distinct lack of a grill... And I do seem to remember Yakatme mentioning something of the sort at his place... ;)

Although - my honest recommendation for a group of photographers is either 100 Montaditos in Midtown Miami, or The Cheese Course in the same area... 100 Montaditos is pretty awesome, because they have 100 different types of little sandwiches, each of which is between 1.50 and 3.50. They also have a very decent beer on tap. Pub like atmosphere, it's nice... The other place is a very nice cheese/sandwich shop - which is a photographic opportunity in itself, and the cheese/sandwiches are pretty great. They also have a nice selection of wines, which I'm a big fan of. :)

The proximity to Wynwood, and the ample parking does make both spots pretty awesome winners, but we could also eat on the beach or whatever - Whole Foods has some killer stuff and we could easily throw together a party here. I'm open to anything pretty much.

Depending on length / timing, if some folks want to stick around until sunset the Ocean Drive area is fairly iconic, and sunset is a killer time to be there, followed up by a walk on south pointe, where we can photograph the Port of Miami, and perhaps a bit of shooting on the beach... *shrug* the whole area is good it's really just a matter of what we might want / what challenges are up. Also, dinner around Lincoln Road, or somewhere else on the Beach is a real possibility - the major issue there is cost, as the average per person here on the beach, with a drink, is about $45... But there are a few really good 'locals' spots that I know of which are really good and won't break the bank.

Of course, if we decide to do this down here, we could have a prioritized schedule, with the more popular stuff first, then working through a list of other stuff for those who want to stick around. My order would probably start with Midtown, meeting at one of the sandwich places for lunch and then Wynwood after everyone has eaten and drank, spend an hour or two there, then move on to Downtown Miami for some great chances at abstract architecture shots, then head over to South Beach and rock this thing until everyone has had their fill.

The beauty of ending the thing in SoBe is that there's just such a wild variety of stuff here, so we wouldn't need any real structure, just go explore, discover, and shoot. Of course, all good things must come to an end.. And around here the hard deadline is about 5am, that's when the bars close and everything just becomes quiet for a couple of hours. :) Although, I've gotten some of my favorite shots of South Beach at that time.
