Just curious as to how you all score a F/S.
What do you look for? Does originality count for anything?
Do you mark those photos down which are repetitive, you know same ole same ole, just wondering.

I just finished going through - I looked for originality, perfection, unusual mood and light, and topics that interest me in particular (landscapes). While most landscapes were rather typical some were of incredibly high quality - close to perfection. There were also some where natural light was captured in an outstanding manner. I also marked highly a few non landscapes that grabbed my attention. I marked low photos of poor quality and with lousy composition (in my opinion). I did not mark at all images that were repetitive even if they were good quality.

I mark them one by one. When it opens on the screen I look at the picture and then into detail. It doesn't really matter to me what the subject is as long as it interests me, I'll vote it high

I have a hat with ten numbers in, I just give it a shake, pick one and voila ;)

My first Free Study and a steadily decreasing 5 pointer as well. Not a landscape. Not too hopeful for this challenge.
Since its a free study, I think more than the content, the quality and the composition should be judged upon. Because its a free study. You don't know what has been going on through the photographers mind. To give everyone a fair shot you can only judge the photos on things that are common to all.

But then again, the landscape shots are of stellar quality and composition. Who am I kidding :(

I think it's a different type of DEEP!

My sentiment too! (HA! ....?)

You know, I was just asking the same question, wondering how different photos I've taken might do in a free study. I won't know until I enter one, and I can't enter until I pony up some cash for membership. I think that'll be soon. But first, I want to put something in for an open challenge and see how things go.
11/01/2011 06:01:46 AM · #16
Even though my paid membership is about to expire, and there are no "rules" for the FS, I decided not to enter one of the 4000 images I took this month because the FS voters tend to really punish great images. FS shows the DPC voters really can not tell the difference between quality and crap when based solely on photography.
I vote FS as well as most of the challenges based on the photography, the quality of the image, the impact it has as well as if it seems to meet the challenge, even a little.
Icelandic long exposed water flows on a weird beach are great and all, but not the ultimate peak of photography - just the peak of DPC FS-ing. Have fun, ignore the score.

That's a pretty broad, sweeping condemnation. These are the same voters who vote on the weekly challenges. You have a month, no theme to adhere to, and an advanced editing ruleset with which to work.....why *shouldn't* the Free Study be judged more critically? Perhaps you should put forth more effort, and work towards putting forth an excellent image rather than blame the voters for their harshness. If the 4000 images you shot this month aren't up to the challenge, is that the fault of the voters?

Put yourself to the test......work *hard*......enter the Free Study, And learn.

I've entered the Free Study Marathon every year since its inception. Do I do well? No! Do I strive to do better? You bet your ass! And the FSM forces me out of my comfort zone.

If I don't score well in a FS.....I look to where the shortfall is.......and it's *not* the voters....

The images I shot this month, and every month, are for my clients, and work. They are not intended to please DPC, they are intended to please my clients.
Working towards the DPC ideal is not my goal, working for my clients ideal is. I find it very hard to shoot just for DPC, as it does not lead to more paid work.
I did a series of Dutch landscapes this summer that I intend to publish, so I entered some of them. I have my opinion, and free will, perhaps instead of telling anyone who disagrees with you that they are just wrong, you could attempt to see their viewpoint? I have not said anything about you, just the general DPC voter, and I say again, they can not tell the difference between crap and quality based purely on image. That is my opinion, that is all it is. We all get one, that is mine. Vote it a 1 if you need.

This is a great question. I look at the image on the screen, and than give it a score somewhere between 1 and 10.

But that is just me

You can not have it both ways, you attack voters telling them they can not tell the difference between crap and quality then get upset because someone disagrees with you. You have a mirror, best to look there first.

ETA signed DPC voter

My reply was not in any way intended to tell you that you're wrong. It was just offering a different perspective, and expressing some surprise at the condemnation of the voters as a group.

I'm not sure what it was that you were expressing as a viewpoint outside of your views on the voting.

I guess I'm not quite sure where you're coming from if you're not shooting for DPC. If you're a professional shooting for clients, what difference does the voting body here at DPC make to you at all?

It doesn't matter to me what you do, and I simply expressed my opinion and perspective.....if you took that as a personal affront, that's on you.

Have a nice day.

I vote a FS based first on if I think it is well done. Even if it does not appeal to me, it will at least get a positive side vote for being a good shot. (for instance, I am not big on flowers, but a well done one still usually gets a 6 or 7).

Second is if it appeals to me personally. Depending on the shot, this can weigh more heavily than the first item. The highest votes go to the shots that connect with me in some way.

Oh, and anything that inspires a Grog comment gets at a least a 7.

I vote first to get all the landscapes out of the way. Landscapes average 30-40% of the entries. It's probably a big defect in my character, but landscapes do nothing for me, so I vote them off the screen (kind of like eating all the peas on my plate first). After they're all together, I compare them as a group & give the one I like the best the highest vote among the landscapes. Then I vote all the people into a group so I can compare & rank them. I do the same with the animals & bugs & flowers. Flowers are usually only about 3-4% of the entries, but they are my favorite part of a FS. The rest is an interesting collection of non-comparable shots which I vote one at a time. At the end, they're all ranked & then I give it a final review. All my 10's get compared & votes adjusted. All the 9's & so on. I change my vote several times during this process.

I would describe DPC as landscape-dominated but with a coterie of free spirits. Most of my learning & growth comes from the example set by the free spirits.

That's a fascinating approach. Never occurred to me. I'm going to try something like that this week. Although, obviously, landscapes are very high on my personal-preference list so I'm not gonna sweep them out of the way :-) Plus, I'd disagree with your statement that DPC is landscape-dominated... Penny has a theory that we each tend to think DPC is heavily-populated by whatever it is we tend to like least :-)

R.

ETA: THIS week, DPC is dominated by dead leaves on the street.

That explains why there are always so many of those darn flowers.
