I finally decided to bite the bullet and get Ipad 2. It is coming next week. I mainly want to use it to learn French. What accessories (cases, cables, protectors etc) and apps (for learning French) could you recommend?

Bump - putting aside French what accessories do you have for Ipad 2? I ordered Incase Magazine cover (I have their cover on Iphone and I am happy with it). Does Ipad need a screen protector?

I would say so. Because you wouldn't forgive yourself if you accidentally scratched it :-( (EDIT: and possibly some kind of hard case too)

We got ours last week, mainly so we couldn't have to carry round the laptop when we go anywhere. The Garageband app is lots of fun :-)

A case, hard or soft, is a very important purchase. Mine is not a smart cover. I didn't see the need to spend the extra money on one. I do like the ones that cover the back as well. No danger of scratching the back. I do not have a screen protector on my iPad. The case protects it when the cover is closed. My iPad 1 is over a year old, never had a screen protector, just a leather case, and the glass looks like new. ( Clean with a microfiber cloth, like the ones you get for eye glasses and camera lenses.

Being a typical American, I barely speak English. I have no suggestions for language software.

Icab Mobile is a very good browser, and will let you upload images form the iPad to DPC. It's the only one I know of that will.

I have the smart cover for mine but find it awkward when I use it in Portrait mode, otherwise it is lite and keeps the screen protected. No scratch protector and mine seems fine. I also carry a small microfiber cloth for cleaning and it shines right back up.

I did buy the camera adapter for it but find the USB connector to be limited when trying to download from a compact disk reader. Works fine with the sd card reader though. Only other thing you need is headsets and your set!

:) Good idea, or bon idé, as the French would say.

Is there not a Centre Culturelle Francais in Melbourne? France is pretty keen on exporting the general idea of itself.

When are you moving?

Thanks! We will be moving some time in 2013. It is a big decision and we are taking it slowly. First learn French and everything practical about the move (finance, healthcare etc), then learn everything about the area we want to live in. Finally sell the house in Australia, rent a place in France and look for a house. Very exciting and challenging at the same time :)
