Ask any photo editor and you'll find that standard viewing conditions for evaluating photographs include an 18% neutral gray background.

During the first few years, it was a smallish site where everyone pretty much 'knew' everyone else.
Then one of the popular photography magazines picked it up, calling it a 'hot' site and telling of
the attributes we all continue to take for granted. (including the no advertising bonanza.)
Many, many people joined and the Challenges got busier, the forums were spinning, and (ahem) there
was some grumbling about the enormous size of the place!
(You can replace the word 'grumbling' with the word 'discontent' and still be fairly accurate.)
Langdon and Drew made changes to accommodate the swelling membership and registered users, adjusting
where necessary. That's when those 2 Tuesday challenges came into being.
It's up to the founders to decide where to take DPC, if indeed, they wish to take it anywhere other
than where it is.
Naturally I have to say my opinion after the history lesson.

I like it the way it is. It evolves, let it do it naturally.

Great post!

It was the DPC community that drew me to the site, made me excited enough to give memberships to friends as gifts and me visiting the site multiple times every day. It was also changes in the community that pushed me away a number of months ago. I saw two trends evolving that made the site increasingly difficult to enjoy:
1) There were many people wanting to take from the site without giving back in some way. There were many questions about "how do I make this better", but the conversation seemed to be gone.
2) It seemed that a number of members sought to elevate their own photography by knocking everybody else down. I think the phrase "mean spirited" was used earlier in this thread and I would agree.

I know what the site used to be like, and, if I was L, I too would have turned my back when the community got ugly. Maybe he's waiting for a group of enthusiasts to rekindle his excitement for this place.

As to the OP, I agree that some technical changes might freshen things up a bit. But I honestly believe it is the community that attracts people and keeps them here. What we should be asking ourselves is who do we want here and how do we attract them?

This place isn't what it used to be. DPC is an awesome community... However, I used to be able to ask a question and get tons of helpful responses. Nowdays, all I seem to hear are crickets with an occasional answer. This used to be my "Facebook"... I was addicted and posted constantly in the forums and had super quick responses.

I don't know... There does need to be change to keep things fresh. There are tons of companies that were doing great business years ago and had the winning formula but they didn't change with the times and are now barely there or non-existent.

Look at Blockbuster as well. They were huge before Netflix, had a winning formula, but were required to change their formula to stay alive.

This makes me a little sad as I used to seek out questions where I might have useful advice. If there is ever a question I might be able to help with, please don't hesitate to send a PM and invite me to respond.

That's quite interesting, actually.

But ask a web browser and you'll find that standard conditions for browsing forums and replying to PMs are depressing with grey and other grey. :-)
That is very interesting though.

How many photo editors are voting here?

How many photo websites use 18% grey as the primary colour?

How many for-pay websites in existence haven't functionally changed their basic front-end in ten years?

And your point? That we should be just like all the other sites? That we should distort the viewing/voting by favoring photos with certain color-schemes over others?

Come on. You know what the point is. That the site should get with the times, be more interactive, more user-friendly, behave more intuitively, look prettier, make use of the standards now available to virtually the entire user base of the web. It isn't that complicated. When you shop at Amazon, do you expect the entire site to be leaf green because that's the colour retail analysts have determined is most conducive to buying?

You're right, though, this site is no longer like any other site.

I like the grey on grey. More interactivity tends to piss me off. The photos are pretty, the website shouldn't compete with them.

See, this site undergoes monumental changes all the time ... ;-)

I wonder if friendlier blues and pinks would increase or decrease aggression here :-)

pink causes agression

Not much wrong with this site in my eyes, yes it could do with a few enchancements (easier ways to upload multiple images, allow users to put a blurb/write-up on their portfolios are two that come to mind) but in general I like the simplistic layouts/colour scheme.

Time for another DPC Poll maybe ?

It would be fun if users could post polls in forum posts. I've seen it done before, on more up to date forums, about ten years ago.

I would really like to be notified when my favorite photographers post new work.

Opps, original question was about adding developer. If the source is in CVS or Subversion, it should be possible for programmers to submit updates that could be incorporated into the production code. But, since dpchallenge isn't open source, there would need to be agreements that prevent somebody from taking all of the code and creating a new site. I would certainly be willing to contribute and I'm sure there are others.

It should be possible, with a bit of thought, for a group of developers to create a customisable league (or whatever) 'plugin' that could be easily incorporated into any site. Whether Langdon would be interested in using such a 'plugin' is another matter entirely.

Of course, Langdon might have DPC3 all coded and ready to go and is just waiting for the 10th anniversary to launch it ;)

Yup, pity I`m the one who makes them... Maybe I should get money for old rope (or Internet V1).

Now THATS an interesting thought! Would I be kidding myself to think you may well be onto something?

studies actually show that when faced with pink, people act less aggressively. That explains why the Oakland raiders, with manly black and silver pirate outfits get their asses kicked all over the field. If they wore pink, the competitors would be passive and treat them gentler.
