This is my first time on the site in over a year. I'm planning to vote 100% on both challenges, an attempt to bring back the ribbons for 100% commenting someone was doing years ago. :D

that's grand. once you get back in the swing of things, I bet you find your
enjoyment in the site will be sky-high.
Vote, comment and shoot for challenges.*
Makes you an addict. No matter what the site looks like.

*Not necessarily in that order.

for me, not the # of comments. I treasure the treasures, I swallow the honest not into its, and endure the ignoring. this is life skill building.

I'm not in favor of change for change's sake, BUT there have been a plethora of decent website suggestions discussed over the years - i.e. changing the "Helpful" checkbox to something slightly more robust, and other minor things like that, as well as making the DPL a permanent institution. Also, Langdon did post an announcement several years ago that he was working on a major upgrade. Understandable if L has lost interest, I can relate. But I do believe that this place will dwindle and die a slow death if at least some improvements aren't made. All it will really take is for another viable site to attract enough participants away - yeah, I know, many have tried and failed, but someday... the way Google+ will destroy FB.

Anyway, would be nice to know what, if any, the plans are.

Not looking for an argument, but an `open letter` or open suggestion is a good way to provoke discussion and hopefully get people on your side and the site owners to listen - and in this case it seems a popular idea so kudos to the original poster.

Without access to the raw info it's hard to tell (member join rate vs member lapse rate, activity rates e.t.c.) but just based on the challenges it appears to be coasting down. I know I have not entered a challenge in a long time and spent some time away and while that does not matter, there have been some great photg fall off - some natural but some DPC could do a better job at keeping around IMO.

I assume there will be a bit of a spike over Xmas/New Year due to the resolution thing as well as people getting gear for presents but that will be short lived as usual.

For me and I suspect some others it's the nuts regulars here that it worth while - it's not the challenges for me. To be honest it's a shame this site is in auto... and to be fair it's hard to say otherwise as far as features and enhancements. Great ideas have come an gone (leagues, mentoring e.t.c.) and it's a shame the site has not taken some of this on. I don't expect anything now.....

Do the Site Council have an opinion on how DPC is run at the moment? Do they think that everything is going great? Or do they think that it could do with a revamp? Dare they answer? Do some of them still actually come here? A lot of them stopped entering challenge literally years ago, maybe their silence speaks volumes.. I expect the usual SC to answer, but the forgotten few - nah - doubt it very much.

very good point. I'd like to see some the answers that SC gives.

I would ask love to see some response from site council!

The "dwindling nature of the site" -assuming that is correct statistically, if that is due to the lack of changes, than implement the changes as noted re: the picture upload, leagues and buttons. It does seem like there are a crap-load of registered users, a good deal of paid members, and maybe the site doesn't need more "casual" users just to enter the challenges- it needs participation- more votes, more comments, more discussion in the forums, more interactions. Its nice and perhaps comforting, even is some are obnoxious, to see the same people around the forums and in the challenges and see new names ands styles all the time as a bonus, - not as part of a superhuge impersonal 2000 per challenge participation with no way to manage voting and commenting, etc.

Like Ken said, no change for change's sake- but at least there are hundreds of millions of people to bitch about the FB change, rather than be casual user who couldn't give a damn and haven't been on the site in a very long time- (like myspace.)

i'm a "relative" noob to the site at just under 3 years....but haven't i seen this general thread (re: dwindling membership and/or dwindling entries and/or dwindling comments) about twice annually?

the site will survive despite (or perhaps because of) it's peaks and valleys. why mess with a winning formula?
09/25/2011 08:23:22 PM · #38
I am not saying that they should change the site completely. Just a few tweaks would be nice. My main this is the comment notifications. I think that a simple "# new comments" would be a nice add. And it wouldn't have to be under a new "refreshing" system. Just use the same 0:10 of every hour that the voting is refreshed on. I think that would be something everyone would like.

That's basically saying you shouldn't innovate since things are fine already. You never know it's broken until you find the better alternative. With your rhombic, we'd have stayed in feudalistic times forever, people would just say "well, this is the best things have ever been as long as anyone can remember... better keep it this way!"

I get where people are coming from when they say "don't fight what is working" and stuff. But why not try something small to see how it responds. Even something so little as say optional colored "shirts" for paid members. Blue is for sure not my favorite color... Have a drop down bar to that lets you pick between say 5 or 6 different colored shirts. Another perk for payed members.

Just little things like this could potentially spice things up a bit and have a positive outcome.

The site may not be losing "numbers" of people, but it certainly has lost paying members by the droves. Including me next month. The site for many loses it's draw and there is nothing fresh to keep you here. The site could certainly use a bit of a fresh look and jump start to make it interesting. The DPL did that to a certain extent, but even that was tossed to the side by Langdon.

ah, the young turks. you do know that every now and then something new IS introduced, like the upping of entry sizes, of portfolio limitations, the dropping of reminders to comment if you give a vote below 3. Certainly making changes to one's profile page might be made easier, and yes, the helpful in the helpful comments might be changed to simple acknowledgement; and instead of coloured shirts maybe different wigs... But I don't envision that any such changes is going to bring the millions in a mad rush to join dpc.

I don't expect it to. In fact I don't think much will other than advertisements. What I do however expect it to do, is keep around the people that are already here.

Completely understand your point especially regarding an open letter and you have no argument from me.

But we all must remember that Langdon owns the site and makes the final decision so it doesn't matter what we discuss in an open letter he will do what he thinks is best or he will do nothing at all.
Sometimes these threads become an open invitation for people to complain for the sake of complaining, lets celebrate what we have! This community is a rare thing and should be celebrated as in this thread Simultaneous Get Together

It's up to Langdon, really (I don't know why people expect the SC to have any insight into DPC revenue or future plans)

But if churn is a problem, then all he needs to do is invest in something like AdWords. It's still money coming in, and it's easier getting it from new customers rather than retaining existing ones.

SC are suspiciously quiet. Didn`t expect that. ;)

They are taking names and sending out validation requests.

Awesome idea, easy to implement. +1 for JH!

This place isn't what it used to be. DPC is an awesome community... However, I used to be able to ask a question and get tons of helpful responses. Nowdays, all I seem to hear are crickets with an occasional answer. This used to be my "Facebook"... I was addicted and posted constantly in the forums and had super quick responses.

I don't know... There does need to be change to keep things fresh. There are tons of companies that were doing great business years ago and had the winning formula but they didn't change with the times and are now barely there or non-existent.

Look at Blockbuster as well. They were huge before Netflix, had a winning formula, but were required to change their formula to stay alive.
