Got a nice email from the head of Netflix today. Started out with him saying he has messed up. Did it mean the 60% price increase was being rescinded or reduced? Nope! Evidently his mistake was not splitting the company in two. So now, in addition to a 60% price increase, we will also have to go to two separate web sites to accomplish what just went up 60%. I feel so much better now. That extra lack of convenience so makes it worth the money.

It's his company, he can do what he wants with it. Similarly it's my money, and I've decided to spend it elsewhere...

So long Netflix, it was usually fun while it lasted.

Gotta say I'm not very thrilled either. Definitely cancelling the streaming part, as they've lost all the content there I may have been interested in. Not sure how much longer I'll keep the DVD by mail part... will wait to see what the competition offers up, I suppose.

I agree. They had a good thing - a very good thing - and have done gone and shot themselves in the foot, reloaded, and shot the other foot.

Yeah, I was reading that e-mail this morning thinking that surely after reading the words "I messed up," I was going to see something about the price increase being reduced. What an odd message.

If they had a really good streaming library, it would be one thing... but it's extremely hit & miss.

Cancelled my Netflix account last week. I've gotten far too busy, and the increase in cost just didn't suit my fancy. If I want to watch something, I'll borrow it from a friend or purchase the bluray or DVD. =)

From the way the email started off, I thought he was going to perhaps at least give people a break on the pricing if they subscribed to both DVDs and Streaming videos. I dropped the Streaming after the price hike because the selection was so terrible. We were paying $10 for both but now are only paying $8 for DVDs so they're getting $2 less from us and probably a lot of other people too. After reading that ridiculous email, we may drop the DVDs too. If they had just raised their prices a dollar or two for the combined package, we, and others, probably would have been OK with that and they would have made a lot of money. Now everyone is so ticked off at them they have lost their customer base and lost tons of money. There are a lot more alternatives now and I think we'll give them a try.

Anybody using Amazon Prime and can rate it...tell a bit about it maybe? We have a Prime account and the hardware, but haven't tried the video yet because we've been using Netflix. Probably going to drop Netflix here also.

We dumped Netflix streaming, however we still have our "old" Netflix service. I'm extremely irritated at the price increase, but until there is a better option for actual discs, we'll probably stay with them. Bottom line, it's convenient to just put stuff on your list, when you want, and watch it when you have time, without bogging down your internet connection. Not that we won't stream content, we'll just go elsewhere to do it.

Once they get big enough, they feel they own the market and the customer will have to go along with it. I'm not a big tv or movie watcher, so I really don't care personally, but my wife subscribes and will no doubt be excited by this news.

for $15 a month i get two by mail from blockbuster.com, and the best part is when i return them, i bring them in store and get a free rental for each mailer i bring in. dropped netflix like a hot potato when they did the split, that email this morning came across as very...deceptive. an apology but "prices ain't changing"? eff yoo.

I never used the streaming part, just the DVD's, so I got a big price reduction. Plus now Netflix for DVD users becomes Qwickster.

I agree the letter was pretty funny...did he miss the point?

You know, I could live with the price increase though if I weren't upset lately about the streaming selection.

I see a movie that's listed on regular TV, like last night "Quantum of Solace" was on. So that must mean I can stream it right, and watch uncut without commercials? Nope. DVD only.

If I'm going to be paying for streaming, they better have a good selection.

Anyway, the company got the message ... their stock is down to less than half of their 52 week high!

Yup...i'm dumping them too....what an idiot company...i'm glad their stock is reflecting how stupid their management is as well...

I had netflix like a year and a half ago, well, back when they first got their online gig up and running. When they released the software for the XBOX360, I subscribed. I watched some of the movies online but cancelled the membership after about three months because I watched everything online that I wanted to see. Fastforward to last month, when they offered me a free trial to check it out again. I thought FOR SURE that their catalogue would have grown, but much to my dismay, it really hasn't. Or... maybe it has just with movies I wasn't interested in. Either way, it seemed really lame, just as I had remembered it, so once again, I cancelled. To me, the rate increase is just insult to injury for those that still have it. It's too bad that company is so poorly ran, they coulda been a contenda...

Full of Hubris :-/

I was unhappy before this but I have to laugh at this idiot.... It's a study in how to flush a business IMO (there is more going on here - they has to be). I also laughed when I saw they didn't bother getting the twitter handle for the new name. The cross between the streaming and DVD queues were important and they destroyed that in one hit. I also see they killed the save queue for stream, so people are short of their 500 slots now.

I admit I flushed the streaming earlier this month... they just had little I cared about streaming and they reduced the selection after I cancelled. They are slow to get DVD and I don't mean just new releases.... older stuff is available for sale for months before they carry it if at all.

I will stick with the DVD mail for a while... I hate Blockbuster more for allowing the local store to "opt out" of the blockbuster mail thing... so you could not get local rental while the mail were sent... WTF was that about... The sign on the door and envelope matched.... Either way, BB are gone locally now.

I've had Netflix for many years, but just canceled. After the cancellation, there was a survey asking for reasons I was not satisfied - None of the options were related to these recent decisions they made. I guess the numbers alone will give them that information.

So long Netflix.

my fear is that physical media will get phased out, leaving us with is poor quality streams. i understand while netflix did what they did, but they really need to beef up their content and delivery system if they want to have any success, the dvd service could have kept them afloat for years and if they fail to provide a better quality of service, they will die.

i am keeping both plans, i dont have cable so netflix offers my kids all the shows they could need to stay happy. i rarely watch it. but i loved the dvd rental service.

Yup, after seeing my bill jump from $9.99/month to $16/month, decided it wasn't worth while anymore. Considering I only watch ~3 movies a month, it's much cheaper to just grab what I want from the Redbox or get it On Demand.

I have been meaning to cancel this for the past few months even before the increase. Now I really need to get it cancelled. It wasn't worth it at $7.99 a month.

currently, the stock is down to 133.84.

It's 12 month high was 304.

Heck the price on Sept 1 was 233!

I hope they get the message...but it's interesting to watch the stock (especially since I don't own any, though I was watching its meteoric rise and considering it.)
09/20/2011 10:58:19 AM · #23
The article I was reading mentioned since the price increase, they've lost over 600,000 members which was "unexpected" for them.

I get DVDs one at a time (usually older TV shows I didn't watch) and my kids use the streaming heavily. I'm dropping DVDs, but keeping streaming. I'll just buy whatever DVDs I want on half.com and then resell them when I'm done.

and their dopey ceo's solution is to send an apology email to customers without any kind of "freebie" to lure them back?

watch for it to go lower. put options anyone?
