Is dead here... first time in our history, maybe any country, that the people repealed a tax.

Suspenders? You mean the European kind, or the US kind?

Anyway, rugman is almost unsuspended now, so this thread will have a new lease of life when he comes in to start posting about the injustices of internet forums.

See Cory...Kimon thinks I'm ok...now for the naive question...(prepares to be berated) What are European suspenders?

Not that I'm aware of. It's not like I was part of his inner circle or anything... We had a couple mutual acquaintances and our orbits intersected a few times. He found my deafness amusing in some strange way :-)

In English English, the straps that go over your shoulders and (hopefully) hold your trousers up are called braces. The underwear directly beneath the trousers is called pants, or knickers if you're a girl.

In the bad old days before tights, ladies wore stockings and a girdle from which hung a number of clips to hold the stockings up. They were called suspenders.

Upper class twits men also wore suspenders - one around each calf to hold their socks up.

Given recent developments, Cory now has the choice of being braced by his braces or suspended by his suspenders.
Or both, of course.

LOL! Oooooh, ok. Now I know what you are talking about.
Thanks for the lesson in fashion history! :)

My mom used to wear a girdle, *giggles hysterically* but they held up the stockings, not because she needed "support". :P

Really, it was for the mono-buttock look. (Trust me on that one)

I though the part which held up stockings (and the stand-alone elastic version) were garters ...

Gotta admit the little hook/clamp mechanism made to secure sheer fabric without destroying it was a pretty clever design.

I'm not an expert on women's underwear, but I've always called the short thin straps that attach onto the stockings 'suspenders', and they then attach on to the 'suspender belt' which holds everything up.

So the whole setup is stockings, suspenders, suspender belt. And the garter is the frilly thing that goes around your thigh for decoration. Brides wear it.

Maybe there are regional differences, I'm pretty sure I've heard the "suspenders" system referred-to as garters and a "garter belt" -- I agree about the frilly thing, leftover from courtly days when a "lady" would give her knight her garter to wear on his arm ("wearing one's heart on one's sleeve"?) as a good-luck charm during combat.

There are also sleeve garters, worn by men on their upper arms ... usually seen on Victorian-era bookkeepers (along with green eyeshades) to keep their long sleeves out of the ink.
