This may have already been discussed, but I for one would like to see another stat provided.... Current Leader

This would only show up in the box where the stats for your images under voting. Therefore, people who don't have photos in the challenges wouldn't be able to see it.

Obviously, not the name of the person, just what the current high average vote is. I think this would be super interesting, and also add even more excitement to the "Update" button.

I don't think it would skew scores at all btw....

Thoughts?

I don't know part of the fun in winning is wondering 2 minutes to rollover if your score is the highest. also the moment rollover happens and you see your photo on the front page is exciting as well. I think knowing if your score was already the leading score or close to it would take some of the fun out of it.

Your proposal would require continuous server hits to calculate the current averages— the same calculation that locks up the site for several minutes at rollover. Obviously, that's not going to happen.

Besides when I figure out from score threads who has a high scoring image, on those rare occasion when I an in the hunt for a ribbon, it requires an effort of will to not to give in to the dark side and tank them by giving the picture a score lower than their image deserves. Lead me not into temptation....

i don't like the idea. i think it makes to focus too much on winning a ribbon. not everyone enters a challenge to win a ribbon. i have three images right now all well exceeding my average and two possibly in ribbon contention, but I'd rather not know if im the leader. i update now mostly to see if anyone commented, no so much for my score.

Same here. My current FS image is not doing awesome but I click it just to see if I have anymore comments. Get six comments so far and am happy every time I see that comment number go up.

I also don't understand why rollover grinds the site to a halt if I'm honest.

Well the average lifespan of hamsters is only 2-4 years and the site has been around for almost 10. I don't think Langdon removes the dead ones because that feeds the new ones so it should be expected that over time some of the remains will clog up the wheel.

I actually had a dream that the site was redone last night (obsessive, eh?) and I hated its layout, so I hope nothing changes :-)

Just out of curiousity, what would one gain out of knowing who is the current leader...other than the obvious.

You mean other than knowing how many ghost accounts you need to create to overcome the deficit?
