OK so I just did a wedding... got home and went to put files on my computer- about half the of raw files will not show a picture. Says file cannot be identified as a supported type. Its raw- and about half the raw are loading with no problems.....

Im gonna freak out and have a massive panic attack!!

I can see the photos on my camera....

ANY ideas?? someone please!

I've heard of this. It's fixable. But I don't have any details. Relax, breathe. Someone will help you out. You'll be OK.

R.

ETA: some of the time this happens if the source file appears to be in use by another application, which might include whatever file transfer utility you are using. Reboot and see what you get.

What program are you trying to view them with? Is it by any chance acdsee?

When I try to view my RAW images, why do I see the error message "The source data format is not recognized"?

The error message "The source data format is not recognized" is usually displayed if you have the RAW image open in another application, which locks the image and prevents ACDSee from decoding it. For example, you will encounter this error message if a RAW image is open in Adobe Creative Suite when you try to view the image in ACDSee. When this occurs, the image is flagged as corrupted by ACDSee and added to the Quarantined Files list. You will be unable to view this image within ACDSee until it is removed from the Quarantined Files list.

To resolve this issue:
Close other image viewing or editing applications.
Start ACDSee and make sure you are in Browser mode.
For ACDSee Pro 3, Pro 4 and ACDSee 12, click Tool |Database | Quarantine Files. For previous versions of ACDSee, click Database | Quarantine Files.
Select the RAW file(s) in the Quarantined Files list.
Click Remove.
Click OK.

Anyway there are various reasons why it can happen. Send one of the files that won't open to me, bear_music@yahoo.com and lemme look. I'll just be up for a few more minutes, so chop-chop...

Maybe the extension is missing? That can mislead apps under Windows.

Are you taking the disk out of the camera and putting in the computer? If so, can you simply wire the camera to the computer and see if you can get them that way?

Maybe try a different card reader or a different computer to rule out something with your hardware.

Whatever you do, do not add any photos to that card until you get this sorted out. I feel that you will be able to get them off the card with some kind of software tinkering.
Wishing you good luck with this. I would be having a panic attack if it happened to me.
You may want to try re-loading the software discs that came with the camera to see if the software in your computer has glitched out over time, then try downloading them using the fresh re-loaded software.
I have always been able to download using usb to the camera when card readers failed to do the job. It's a lot slower, but it seem more stable. Make sure you have plenty of battery power or plug the camera power supply in while doing the download.

She shouldn't need/use software at ALL to download, IMO. Just plug a card reader in and drag/drop the files to a folder on the computer. That's all I do, it's bulletproof...

THEY AREN'T GONE! You'll get them back. Don't breathe a word of this to the clients. If the camera can see them, we're gonna be able to get them. Just guard that card with your life. Copy the entire contents of the card to a folder on your drive using a card reader, drag and drop. If you don't have a card reader, get one tomorrow at Staples or Best Buy or something. You want some redundancy here.

It'll be fine. Relax :-)

Listen to Bear. He speaks wisdom.

Relax...

And don't put anything else on the card until it's rescued.

I have a "Rescue" program that came with my card... It can be done.

Keep posting until you have what you need.

I can send some software if necessary... try dragging and dropping.

But, first... get some sleep and try fresh in the morning!

I have 3 card readers- none of which are allowing it- and now the camera cant see them either.

Robert is right. It's just a matter of figuring out how to get them back. Definitely the first thing to do is to try to make a copy of all the files, good and bad, as Robert recommended.
When you tried again, did it repeat the same pattern of good and bad file numbers? Is it a group of numbers, or is it random bad ones scattered through the whole group. Maybe that will help someone figure out what's going on.
Try shooting on different card with your camera and see if everything is normal with uploading the new ones.

its a series about half way thru, and I know which photos they are. I switched from AP to TV for the ceremony to get a faster speed, and its the chunk right there in the middle. and then 4 at the end- which is weird cause those are jpegs and had nothing to do with the wedding, was tyring to caputre a night sky -- im running a recovery software now *crosses fingers*

The file you sent me got corrupted in transfer. It doesn't look like something the camera did. I can't open it. If you can still read them in the camera, they're definitely still there. For gawdsake don't ruin the recovery software until you've backed everything up. I'm off to bed now. Good luck.

Good luck Carrie. I hope you get them back.

..I'm working on it.

Don't want to sound like I know it all but I think you should send a file to every on DPC willing to have a go at it. I have recovered filed from drives that were broken open and left in a bowl of milk. I'm not saying I can get your photos but I can give it a good try.

I sent you a pm. Send me one of the files.

Don't run recovery on the only copy you have. Make 2 discrete files and run it on one of them.
