In our tourist town, I constantly see people with DSLRs and lenses without the lens hood in place. I didn't understand this, until today. And, most of these people forget about keeping the sun on the back of their shoulders. They have no fear of shooting directly into the sun, or at least they do not fear direct sun rays hitting the front element of their lenses. Now I know they are intentionally trying to generate lens flares in their images. Wow, it's a great creativity technique! I guess those multiple circles of color really do represent added elements of interest. I've been wrong to assume those flares were fatal flaws. Live and learn!

Some of them... I'd bet a good 2/3rds are just clueless..

I figured that was the whole point of the challenge- - to work with something that's much more difficult. I had a number of wonderful star images, but I'm entering a lesser image with flare. It could be a big mistake!!!

I agree, I'll be looking at flares that add something to the picture, be it composition or impact or whatever, not just a flare for the sake of it.

No doubt, it's MUCH more difficult. Especially with better glass, as others have mentioned. I did the best I could with a Sigma 10-20 (I typically use the Canon) and el-cheapo Quantaray UV filter. I even tried the trick that was mentioned in the other thread about unscrewing the filter and trying to angle it in front of the lens slightly...no joy there. This was definitely tough...and staring at the sun gets old really fast. None the less, I actually enjoyed this challenge...it taught me more about lens flare than I was previously aware.

I wasn't as brave as you and took the middle ground with the image that I chose, it has a little bit of lens flare, but not a noticable amount like some of the beauties that I've seen on Flickr.

2 hours to go...I can't wait to see the other entries!

Thanks!

I'm along the same thinking that you are, Wendy. The starburst anyone can do and I'm sure there will be a zillion silhouettes with starbursts, but the flare part is the tough part and I understood that to be the "challenge" for this one. Who knows. I'm terrified!

If you google Lens flare there are many with star burst, so I hope people don't dish out DNMC for them.

Read the challenge description does'nt say anything about the type of Lens flare you ought to have. Keep an open mind please e.one.

I don't think I will score down for star burst lens flare, but If it comes to two that I like equally one star burst and one circular lens flare I think I will score the circular up a bit, just for the plain fact that I know how difficult it is to achieve decent circular lens flare.

As is almost always the case, a visually strong image that is a marginal fit to the topic will still perform better than a mediocre picture that suits everyone's definition.

I still contend that the two are VERY different.

For illustration: the image above has a ton of starburst, and a little bit of flare. No way in hell I'd give that a high score in this challenge.

Yes, that 6.15 voting average shows that I've been dropping them all over the place. Actually, I like them so much that I keep most of them for myself.

Actually, you're one of the most thoughtful members/voters here. When I get a comment from you ... I pay attention. I have a tremendous respect for your body of photographic work. Thanks for being here and hanging in with the menagerie!
