Yep i wouldn't have entered if not for the byoakc. But i had fun. There was a group of shooters in the same location i was yesterday and they kept shaking their heads while looking at me shooting at the sun.

Using live view helps with the blindness factor if you can see the LCD in the bright light.

It was fun. Learned a few interesting thing.

Some of us brought out our cheapest gears, not just lens. For the torture of direct sunlight shooting. Mine doesn't have live view.

After another hour of shooting at the sun yesterday, I was seeing flare spots everywhere!! Unfortunately, my camera couldn't see the spots that my eyes saw. :)

So how can I tell now how badly I've ruined my sensor? Should have come with a warning flag if you ask me.

Kind of. I cannot find a definitive answer on the damage that can be done to the sensor by shooting into the sun. It's clearly not advisable, but you can get away with it. But for how long? At what angle? I really don't know.

I've always been worried about this and I've never really shot into the sun purposely before this week except for sunsets when the sun's not so bright. But I'm thinking this is a photography site so people here must know what they're doing!!
With a film camera there used to be two warnings:
Leaving the camera pointing at the sun for too long could burn a hole in the film.
Pointing the lens at the sun could cause the exposure meter not to read properly,
But even then they didn't say your equipment would be ruined permanently, they just warned you not to do it.
There are many more very knowledgeable people on this site who know way more about this than I do though!!!

To answer your question, my guess is the angle doesn't make any difference if the sun's in the picture! But that's only a guess.

Anyone interested in critiquing my entry?

Thank you Paul, I'll shoot you a PM.

For those of you worried about pointing your camera directly into the sun and causing sensor damage I can offer this.

I once captured some macro images with my Canon 30D of gold being melted in a crucible . The gold got white hot and I myself was wearing dark welders goggles to counter the brightness. The 30D still lives with no ill effects from this fiery episode. Maybe I just got lucky, but I'm thinking you would need to take a very long exposure of a bright object to cause sensor damage- and why the heck would you do that? :)

You can burn your eyeballs by looking directly at a arc weld. With a powerful arc welder, damage can be done in a split moment. One of my aircraft mechanic professors had once worked in a ship yard, he got flashed by someone using an arc welder without the proper protection screens up, burning his eyes. Said it felt like he had sand in his eyes for over two weeks. He got lucky and had no permanent damage. Intense and energy driven light can do damage at a distance. Shooting directly into the sun is not recommended. Think about it, you are asking a very light sensitive sensor, one that can shoot in almost complete darkness, to also stare directly into the sun? Doing so during an eclipse will blind you, how is that good for your super sensitive sensor? So be careful and be smart before being stupid and hurt, and since cameras take lots of money to heal, save your gear and save your cash, who has extra money these days to throw away on foolish repairs? I know a few members on this site have lost their cameras and worse. Hate to think about the horrible day when one of us goes to capture an image and only get Error or nothing at all. Right now, I would struggle to try to replace mine.

Had this not been the very first challenge for the BYOAKC.....wonder how many people would have actually entered this challenge? The number of participants in this challenge will be artificially inflated because of this side challenge.

Curious, how many entered for that reason??

I did.

What's the BYOAKC? WPL-related?

added: BYOAKC break your own average score competition - random pairings try to beat their own average by more than their opponent does theirs. The random topic was the challenge of last sunday, so we got stuck competing using Lens Flare.

I never would have entered this challenge and hope my pitiful entry doesn't bring my avg down too much. :-(
The only way I would benefit from entering this challenge is if Lad has a worse flare than I do!

#4 here.

I'm up against Jagar. My only hope is that he can't beat his average of 11!

CJinCA you should be in total fear of both your own average score and for mine....
I quite like my entry but that always means it won't score very well...
Good luck ( sorry not good at trash talk)

Hey, you're better at it than I!
Maybe I should just pull my entry and forfeit - nah, I'm a glutton for punishment, besides, you might just be lying and have a really sucky entry! :-D

The "Star Burst" on it's own is also flare as is the typical 5/6/7/8/9 sided flare. There are online groups dedicated to Star Burst flare on Flickr and elsewhere. I would be most disappointed in voters if entries in this challenge are DNMC'd just because there aren't 5 in line in your face aperture flares rather than just a "Star Burst". Note that flare doesn't have to be in your face and can be fairly invisible. Expensive lenses (primes, UWA's) have very special coatings to attempt to reduce or counteract the effects of flare and reflections.

IMO as long as the entry has any flare, in any form, in any quantity, subtle or in your face, it DMC.

Magnum,

I truly hope that other voters share your opinion on this as my "flare" consists of a rather larger starburst and only 2 little specks of traditional "flare." Unfortunately, I foresee many DNMC 1s and 2s in my future...though I suppose time will tell.

The starburst is so much easier to do and almost always looks wonderful. The flare is so much more difficult to successfully work into a picture. I figured that was the whole point of the challenge- - to work with something that's much more difficult. I had a number of wonderful star images, but I'm entering a lesser image with flare. It could be a big mistake!!!
