| Hi, I am considering purchasing a 7D shortly, I currently have the 500D, and was looking for some guidance from those of you who have the 7d and upgraded from similar. Has it been worthwhile? what are the real advantages you have found by doing this.? I have been into photograghy for a year now since first getting my 500D, and would best describe myself as an enthusiastic amateur. I cant say for sure that I have found any limitations with my 500D, I just figure if there is better out there maybe I can grow into it more. My sons race jetskiis and I alway take my camera and photogragh the races and have recently turned my attention to other competitors for practice and have been sending them the photos (which they have been very appreciative of) so maybe the faster frames per second may be useful.? Is photo quality any better, I shoot mainly with L glass. Your insightfulness will be most appreciated. |

I went from a 350D to a 40D and the difference was HUGE. Then I went from the 40D to a 7D and the difference is AMAZING.
Focusing capabilities
Fast fps
Lower noise
Extremely customizable
This camera is smart smart smart
So, YES, the upgrade will be HUGE and worth every dime.
I cannot believe just how much sharper my pictures are... it really shows off "L" lens capabilities. |

| Over the years I've moved from a 300D to a 350D to a 20D to a 40D to a 50D and then to a 7D. The 350D and 50D turned out to be negligible upgrades, and the 7D was the biggest leap. The speed, focusing capabilities and image quality will be very noticeable in sports photography. |

I've had my 7D for a few weeks now, it replaced my 450D.
I love it.
It feels really well made (heavy)
Much clearer and more color in the photos.
Makes much better use of the L lens.
You will love the 8 FPS, make make sure you have some fast cards tho.

I have a 7D and I have a 5D MKII. The 7D stays in the bag most of the time. Picture quality on the 5D MKII is much much better, though I have to say that recently I've been keeping Highlight Priority enabled on the 7D and it seems to have transformed it's dynamic range. Strange that, because the same setting on the 5D MKII is ruinous.
No doubt the focussing system on the 7D is streets ahead of the 5D but looking at your work on your profile, I think a full frame body with it's amazing smoothness would suit your work really well. Though, no doubt the Jet Ski stuff will benefit from the 7Ds skill-set.
From what I've read the 5D MKIII will come out early 2012 - this is likely to be the best of both worlds, full frame, buttery smooth images and a focussing system similar to the 7D. The only compromise will be the FPS I imagine.
We are already beginning to see deep discounts of the 5D MKII which will probably make it nearly as 'affordable' as the 7D. Given the choice, I'd have the 5D every day of the week; but I might have a different view if I shot different sorts of stuff.
I think the 7D makes perfect sense if you were heavily invested in EFS lenses but with your L glass, that won't be an issue. Sure, your longer lenses will seem kind of short on that body and the small crop of centrally placed AF points will get on your nerves a bit, but once you get your images onto a computer screen and begin to edit - you'll grin.
I'll be trading in my 7D for a 5D MKIII as soon as it is released but I'll be keeping my 5D MKII as a second body.
There are plenty of people very happy with their 7D and it is incredibly capable in terms of it's technical jiggery-pokery; but for me, I have been thoroughly seduced by the benefits of the full frame sensor on the 5D MKII

I went from the 350D to the 7D, it was quite the leap.
Like others have said the higher frame rate, fast and flexible AF and lower noise were all huge differences.
I will add a couple of more.
- The viewfinder clarity. I was amazed at how much clearer everything looked through the viewfinder, in addition to the 100% view
- Remote firing of Speedlites. I was actually looking for this capability to try some photography with multiple lights. It is limited, of course since it is an optical trigger, but does give a cheap entry point to try it out. I bought a second speedlite with the camera.
- Usage of existing IR remote. I had grown quite fond of the RC-1 remote I had and didn't want to give it up. I don't understand why other cameras in the XXD line didn't have this feature.

I'm going to be the voice of dissent here. If you don't feel the 500D is limiting you, why upgrade? I believe the IQ is comparable to my 50D which I am very happy with. Low light does test the ability of the camera, but I have also learned techniques to overcome that. On the other hand, if you can easily afford the 7D, then might as well, it is a superior camera from everything I hear, though I have not had opportunity to try one.

I use a 550D though have had quite a bit of use out of a friend of mines 7D - if you find the 500D is limiting you in one way or another (for me, the burst rate, memory buffer, weather sealing and focusing system - view finder and spirit level are nice too) then I believe the upgrade is definitely worth while, HOWEVER, if you're going to be spending a large sum of money on a camera upgrade and you can wait a few months before upgrading, why not wait for the new 5D? Signs seem to be pointing to a February 2012 release currently.

| I am thinking there is going to be a significant price difference between the 7D and the 5D MIII. Of course is money is not an option then waiting probably would make sense. |

| Oh steve I knew someone was going to pick up on that, darn!! However after reading the comments here I will definately be getting the 7D. I did look at the 5D but would only consider getting the mk111and the price is out of my league any time soon. I do however see that as the next upgrade in a year or 2 if I feel the need. (have to have something to aim for) Thanks everyone for your thoughts |

You are certainly going to get quite a few reactions to this one. But you will have to read through people's responses to see which one fits your situations. I will voice mine ( in case it fits).
I had the 350D for 5 years. In that time I improved my lenses. The logic being - that the lenses would outlast the body and are more important. Originally I was a film shooter. I upgraded to the 7D. My immediate response - was the feel/ weight of the camera. Loved it. - it was more what I experienced with a film SLR. You would probably get the same sensation with the 50D (but not the 60D). I will leave others to talk about the other features ( which are important) - but the feel and the sealing, weight etc was the major thing I loved about the camera. Made me want to use it more. In comparison to the 5D - would I have gone 5D if money was no option ? Yes - I would have , similar body to the 7D but full frame. But the extra money was an issue. So therefore - no regrets.
Would I go the 7 D ? Yes - without hesitation. |

I could have wrote this, "I went from a 350D to a 40D and the difference was HUGE. Then I went from the 40D to a 7D and the difference is AMAZING." YES, and I being I did the same and agree 100% with this statement! I keep the 40D as a backup and Cringe every time I use it. I loved the 40D and the only reason I upgraded was for Higher ISO's and more Megapixels. I LOVED MY 40D when I purchased my 7D.... 7D is light years ahead! It is hard to use my 40D now! |
