Anyone participating in this? Seems like a prize system ripe for abuse to me, but I'm also intrigued.
I Shot It: The Best Photo Competition
Our premium competition runs for three months. If you enter the competition in the first month you will receive three credits. In the second month two credits, and in the final month, one credit. After the first credit has been used, remaining credits can be used at anytime during the competition to enter a photo.
As more people enter the competition the prize money grows. At the end of the competition, two judges will choose a winning photo and runners-up. The winner will then be contacted by email to receive the cash prize.
Our photo competitions are open to everyone around the world. |

| It doesn't have any rules listed as to what you can do or not do to a photo and what the size needs to be etc. etc. Or at least I didn't see any. |

| There is a minimum size requirement under the entries tab. For me, the key is that "Premium" competition costs $10 to enter. Currently there are 373 entries, prize pool is at $1960. That leaves a $1,770 "prize" for the organizers. |

Sounds legit....It just looks like a contest that has an entrance fee. Some of that fee is given to the "winner" and the rest (most) goes to the CEO. I would guess that as long as they tell you what you're up against and the CEO pays his/her taxes, I guess it is legit.
It may be the same as:
I buy a $2500 lens. I advertise it as the prize in a photo contest. It cost $10 to enter. I will only allow up to 3000 entries. 2000 people enter at a total cost of $20,000. I or "someone" picks the best photo. The winner gets the lens and I get $17,500 minus my federal taxes.
EDIT: The big question is: "Who is doing the judging, and how do we know their wife/husband is not the winner?

Actually, that was my biggest concern. Don't have a problem where there is a contest with an entrance fee and the organizer takes a "rake" from the entry fees, but I would like some sort of assurance that the house isn't setting a shill to take the prize. |

The house is already taking a big chunk of the entry fees. Setting up a shill to take the prize would be counter-productive. There's no need to do it, and if a real entrant wins the prize, they can use that as a testimonial to encourage future entrants.
But I agree that having '2 judges' doesn't instill confidence that the process is fair. They'd be better off leaving the voting to the public. |

I am a web developer who has been creating the I SHOT IT website. I love my job and I love looking at all the photos that get uploaded everyday.
I agree that more than 2 judges would be better. I don't think we would be better off leaving the voting to the public as this would be open to abuse. Paying independent judges is probably the safest method.
I think it's natural for people to be a bit suspicious of a new photo competition website, but some of the comments are a bit unfair. We do take 50% of the entry fee and the rest goes towards the premium competition prize. A company like this does have a lot of initial expenses and running costs: website developers, support staff, advertising, judges, and server hosting that can handle lots of data.

All judging is subjective. Public voting doesn't make anything fairer at all. It simply means that people will post on FB and twitter to vote for their pictures.

The initial prize started at $1000. If the prize pool was $1960 at this point in time, then $960 divided by 2 is $480. The correct figure is much less than your calculation. I hope this clears things up for anyone who wishes to enter a competition. |

I can verify that the I Shot It contests are legit....I just won first place in the bird competition...$957 for first prize...money was in my PayPal account within days of notifying me that I had won. It was $3.00 to enter.
I like the fact that there are judges...that way it's not how many friends you can get to vote for you...I never ask my friends or anyone on my photog page to vote...I don't even tell them that I have entered until i know if I place or not.

You can check it out...all you have to do is go to the I Shot It and can see my pic...owl with it's head upside down...I have a Flickr and FB page too if you think I am just not an amateur photog that entered a contest and won. |

LanndonKane....no, I did not make an account to promote the site at all...just saw that people were wondering how legit it is...I wondered the same thing to...until I won and actually got paid! I am a relatively new photog and have just started entering a few online competitions, so I do understand the skepticism.

that sounds good. if you want to learn how to get better at photography competitions, and photography in general, this site can't be beat |

Surely you can understand our skepticism when a thread is bumped after several months by someone that just registered at this site today touting the competition.
Your description of the winner for the bird shot matches what is on your facebook fan page, so that part appears legit. Since we only had the word of an employee of the competition who only posted twice here, and a winner, it is reasonable to assume spammy behavior.

| Pentax K-5: I found this site when I googled "I Shot It" today to check on the status of a competition...and was curious about what others had to say about I Shot It being legit...so, if that's "spammy behavior"...why in the world would I waste my time posting on this site if I did not think I had something to say that might help other people to make an informed decision about entering the competition...glad that this old lady "appears legit"...LOL! |

I've got to agree with the folks saying this was a little bit of some strange behavior.
No big deal though - I honestly hope both of you will consider really using those accounts that you've created, and joining us here on DPC..
Clearly lisalkee, you probably prefer to win the big $$ with your best, but we'd love to have you come and join us anyhow, perhaps we could learn some nice new tricks from ya! :)
As for opengl, I don't know if you are a photographer or not, but I'm pretty sure you're not a spammer, as that username is very geeky, but not spammy.. We are always open to new members, and it'd be fine to have you as well if you're interested in photography...
Now as for the other site, paid competitions aren't really my thing, as it seems too much like gambling, but I'm sure that there are some here who are interested. Making yourselves an active part of this community would ensure that more of us become familiar with you and your own community, which would also be welcome, hopefully, if you are legitimate, you'll join us, and some of us will join you and win some funds, as I do think we have a group of some of the very best around here.
As a final thought, and I want to be clear, I know you were responding to an existing thread, asking about exactly what you're talking about, and thank you for the input, nor do I mean this in a rude or hostile way, but merely say this to inform you; but you do run a for-profit site, and this site is supported somewhat through Google Ads revenue, if you do wish to advertise here, and that would be welcome I'm sure, I would suggest that method, as it will build brand-recognition, and you can set your Google ads to display only on this website if you wish. |

Cory: Thanks for the invite...actually, I have been shooting less than 2 years and have just entered a few competitions in the last 6 months...I just got "lucky" to win first place and a nice amount of money...I am the one who has alot to still learn from other photogs. Not sure I would fit in here as I am primarily a nature/wildlife photog.
I really just saw this site and wanted to share my experience with I Shot It...I had no clue I would cause such a ruckuss! |
