| I just recently upgraded from a Sony P31 to a S85 Cyber-Shot and I want to start printing out my photos, what type of paper do you suggest (I have a HP Deskjet 692C printer)? |

My personal preference after trying a couple of brands is Ilford Classic Pearl paper. It gives a nice matte look to your photos that's virtually indistinguishable from lab photos. The back of the paper gives it away though - its rough and not smooth like lab photos. They've got papers with glossy finishes though I've never tried them
Its still the best buy for my canadian dollar... If I buy it in bulk I'll pay almost 50 cents CAN a sheet!

Also you'll find that different papers work well or better with different inks. Often the paper from your printer manufacturer will work extremely well with inks for your particular printer.
I like Epson inks on Epson ColorLife paper - I get good colour accuracy and I like the satin finish to the paper. Works well under glass. The same paper is terrible in an HP printer with HP inks, but HP photopaper works well in that case (and badly with the Epson inks)
www.inkjetart.com has a lot of paper and info, but with a bias towards the 6 and 7 ink Epson systems.

Have you ever used Kodak paper with an Epson? I've heard it is good. |

I've used the Kodak Ultima and it is good too, I just like the Epson colorlife the most, personally

I have the HP officejet, and it prints very nice photos on a heavyweight glossy paper, of any brand, really. My last batch of 8x10's were on Burlington brand, and I'm quite happy with that. I also use Kodak, and that works very nicely as well.

The paper I use is from Red River Paper. Redriverpaper.com. I usually use there 68# high gloss but I just ordered a sample pack of all of their papers and they are amazing. Of course the quality could vary on different printers. The printer I am using is the Epson C80 with the pigment based inks.

| I have a HP deskjet 1120c, and have tried an variety of papers, but have found that Jet Print Photo Professional Photo Paper consistently gives me by far the best prints. JetPrint also offers a variety of paper types for different picture effects |

I took a digital photography class last year, one of the assignments was to print the same photo on 10 different papers from different manufactures, in the entire class we probably tried out 60 different papers. The best photo paper maker IMO is Illumijet. They have a bunch of different papers that produce excellent results, my #1 pick from them is soft suede, it produces excellent colors and tones, of course one paper does not produce the best results in all pictures, what is good for one print may be horrible for another.

I was just out getting more paper for a 50th Anniversary shooting I did and the salesman said he was at a seminar for the store, Office Depot, and of all tests conducted they recommend you use the paper manufacuted by your printer manufacturer. I'ts made to give the best results with their particular ink and capacities. I have a HP officejet d135 and have had wonderful experience with the hp papers, all of them. I also get fantastic results with Kodak Ultima Satin finish. I really like this one, as I use very, very little glossy. To keep down the cost some for every day photos or proof shots I use either hp every day photo matte, printable on both sides, extra heavy weight or Breat White Imaging & photo paper, matte finish. They both give excellent results and the photos last. So this is personal experience plus testing results. Just thought I'd pass it on.

I don't think they sell it directly from thier site,but they do have a lot of info on it. I purchase mine online at Calumet photo. I think their web site is www.calumetphoto.com

We did a similar thing in a class I took, even printing on canvas/ watercolour paper etc - I think you are correct though - it really depends on the image you are printing what suits it. Also depends a whole lot on having good profiling for the printer/paper/ink and monitor
combination. |

I am a big fan of printing my photos and have tried many papers. I have an HP DeskJet932C and it prints beautiful photos (albeit, no archival ink option is available). Each printer is different, so test for yourself.
Anyways, I have tried lots of papers and my favorite is ]ICI's OLMEC Optimum Photo Gloss for GLOSS or ICI's OLMEC Optimum Photo Satin for MATTE.
This website, Digital Art Supplies, has a great selection of papers and even sells multi-packs so you can try several papers before you buy. |
