I know that D40's have limited compatibly with some of the lens for Nikon...be sure yours will "get along" with each other |

Get the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G, much more usefull range and will auto focus on the D40.
Look here :)
But if you must have the 50mm this this one will auto focus on the D40.

With the entry level Nikon DSLRs (D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, D5000, D5100), you would want to look more towards Nikon's AF-S lenses if you want auto focus.
AF-S 50mm f/1.4G is nice, cost about $440 (US at B&H).
AF-S 50mm f/1.8G goes for about $220 (US at B&H).
Then again, as marbo suggests, the 35mm is great for the D40x; goes for about $200 (US).
Keep in mind that a 50mm lens on a crop sensor is equal to a 75mm full frame lens; nice for portraits on your camera. While the 35mm is close to "normal" lens on your camera...
