So anything and everything I'm happy to help out, I work in the tourist business and would love to make planing a trip over here even easier for our tourist :)

So if you have questions, shoot and i'll find an answer :D

When's the best time of year for photographers to visit, Krisby? What's a good rental car for navigating the island, and how much is it going for? Good places to stay, and costs? Food? Costs? SELL us on the place :-) I mean, we know what it LOOKS like, but sell us on its affordability (assuming it's affordable, that is...)

I heard that you can fly to europe via Iceland Air via BWI,BOS,JFK,MSP, YYZ and MCO and stay over for an extended period in Iceland without a penalty and then carry on to europe for the same price as the original ticket to europe. This is to boost travellers to Iceland. I don't know the specific details though.

Iceland is as spectacular as everyone says it is - and as you know, they show photographs to prove the point.

From lava flows, calderas, waterfalls(!), glaciers, hot bubbling pools, to birds and good looking horses, it's all there.
The light for photography is remarkable. When I was there in May (of a year long gone) the light seemed to be always 4:00 and lovely for pictures. And if Iceland wasn't enough, sometimes there is available a short flight and stay at rudimentary housing in Greenland. Another amazing photo opportunity.

I used an Iceland Air tour to go completely around the island, staying in boarding school dorms (school not in session, of course) and met a wonderful bunch of people. Otherwise, it was, then, 4-wheel drive roads and gasoline was through the roof in price.

Lots of delicious fish to eat.

Too bad all my pics are fading prints in a photo journal or I'd show some now.

When's the best time of year for photographers to visit? July or January depending on what you want, midnight sun or no sun at all ;)
What's a good rental car for navigating the island, and how much is it going for? You can do most in a small and cheep car, //www.cheapjeep.is is a company that rents used cars in good shape, just under 100$ per day for the cheapest. To do the highlands you would rather buy a guided tour //www.adventures.is/
Good places to stay, and costs? Reykjavík is a good starting point, hotels are everything from 40$ per night for sleepingbag accomidation and up. There are camp sites pretty much everywhere.. they are pretty cheap.
Food? Good food all year round, a good seafood dinner is usually around 25$.
Costs? flights from Boston with Iceland air the 9th of August and return the 18th (random dates) is around 880$, it costs less if you book in advance, delta is allso flying don't know there prices

What you get from this is that iceland is expencive.. we are after all a island in the arctic so almost all food and goods are imported. Our ecconomy has been giving us trouble as well so inflation rates are high..
But on the other hand Iceland is far from any other country, the same isolation that make every thing expencive gives us a very unique edge.. nature is like no where else in the world, going glacier hiking on a volcano.. So active volcanos that are actually coverd with glaciers.. that is some thing else.

I think this is correct, I have at least heard about it.. more info //www.icelandair.co.uk/

If anyone has any other requests or questions send them to me :)
The point of this thread is mostly to help people that are coming here rather than making people think they should come (but they should!) ;)

WOW!! That is one of the places I'd love to go to! What about September/October? What would you recommend to see in autumn? If you had one week to get the most incredible landscape shots where would you go? (I am OK for day hikes, say 15km max easy/moderate walking so there is time to take long exposure shots). Are there any B&Bs in Iceland? Are there any bicycle paths? (I hope that's not too many questions! :)

MargaretN:
September/October tend to be quite rough.. wind and rain are dominant and autmn colors are washing away. In october though you have a chance of seeing the northern lights :)
All the usual attractions are still magnificent in autumn.

In a week i would say that the Reykjavík city area and the south shore is the best choose.. loaded with waterfalls, black beaches and unbelivable glacier landscape just by the main road!

About bikes, you can rent them in Reykjavík and there are loads of beatuiful places to bike to with in the city.

B&B's are not that common over here, but guesthouses are and they do pretty much the same thing :)

Hope it helps :)

I went to Iceland last June; it was great. PHOTOS

The toughest part was getting sleep, I wasn't really expecting no darkness at all. We rented an apartment on the water facing North and they don't have blackout curtains, so it was never dark.

I flew Iceland Air direct from Seattle, it was great and easy. Worst part is that the week before I was in Brazil, so had a 3 day layover at home and really wasn't ready for another long flight, but the instant you hit the ground and see Iceland, you are ready to start shooting.

Marion, those negatives went the way of all negatives a long time ago, but yes, I still have the prints.

Into an archival filling system? Perfect!

Iceland is pretty much right at the top of the list of places that I want to visit/photograph. I want to go there during the next solar maximum to see the Aurora Borealis. I will definitely have lots of questions to ask when I get around to planning a trip :) I just have lots of saving up to do, coming from South Africa it is going to be an expensive trip...

08/21/2011 02:41:56 PM · #17
When I get the money this is the first place I plan on going to. It will be a while before I can find the money to go. That being said anything that will help with travel tips and such will help!!! :)

I do have a few questions though... Say I wanted to go for a looong period of time... 2 or 3 months even.... Is there a time frame that I could come that would be calm (with the weather I mean) throughout my trip?

My dream vacation is Iceland and basically what I want to do is this... Travel all around the coast line for the first half of the trip then move inland for the second half. (Or vise-versa depending on a few things).

Iceland is my goal for the future. This summer I've been to Norway for 2 weeks and now I need Iceland too :)

What I heard from Italians who have been there is that everything is very expensive. You've written that you can easily eat for 25$, but they told me (I can say they are very reliable people) that usually you spend 60-70$ or more (more or less the same is in Norway - I ate a lot of kebabs, I'm not a rich man ^_^)

What can tell me about it?

Ciao

Here is a quick list of things I like around the island.. hope it gives you some ideas, at least some words to google :D

South:
Reykjavík ( don't miss: Perlan, Harpa, Hallgrímskirkja, blue lagoon, Grótta and the shoping mall Kringlan!)
Golden circle ( Most popular tourist tour: Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss)
Seljalandsfoss (waterfall you can walk under)
Skógarfoss (massive waterfall neer to Eyjafjallajökull volcano/glacier)
Vík, Reynisdrangar (small town, beautifull black beach)
Skaftafell (glaciers and Svartifoss waterfall)
Jökulsárlon (glacier lagoon)

East:
I know very little about this part but it has beautiful steep mountains and long fjords.
Egilstaðir

North:
Mývatn (beautiful lake in an geothermal area)
Húsavík (town known for whale watching)
Akureyri (lagest town out of the capital area, very beautiful and quiet!)
Skagaströnd (my home town ;) the pure old icelandic fishermans vilage)

West:
Vestfirðir (west fjords, very remote, beautiful and isolated)
Snæfellsnes (glacier national park and beautiful towns)
Hvalfjörður (Calm and beautiful fjord, close to the capital area, well worth driving through)

If you want to do some activities as well i recomend my work :) //www.adventures.is/
We have many day trips from Reykjavík but as well some rafting in the north and glacier hikes from Skaftafell in the south.

Hi everyone!
Just a reminder, I'm still 100% up for answering any questions you might have :)

Quite a few people have sent me mails and I find it so rewarding to be able to communicate some of my tourism-knowledge to members of this community!

All the best from Reykjavík

Thanks Krisby! :)

How is Iceland in May? any special natural aspects that only occur then? like blooming fields, stronger waterfalls, etc. Still any chance to see the Aurora then?

HeyHey.. I love May in Iceland, its kind of our only spring month :) End of May we have massive amount of Lupine flowers growing wild, i find it quite lovely but their beauty is debated a lot over here. Waterfalls in May are a bit tricky since there is so much water in all rivers at that time of year, this makes even the smallest streams quite powerful.. this also makes long shutter photography a bit harder to manage.
Seeing the Aurora in May is highly unlikely since it is only really dark between 2 am and 5 am at that time :) There is still always a chance!
