in the "classic" internet meme style.

advanced, with a rule to allow the border/text.

you can be serious, or you can have a lot of fun... i think it might be neat.

I'd love to do one of those. Looks like there have been a few already though:

//www.dpchallenge.com/challenge_results.php?CHALLENGE_ID=734
//www.dpchallenge.com/challenge_results.php?CHALLENGE_ID=1033
//www.dpchallenge.com/challenge_results.php?CHALLENGE_ID=1034

Still, seems like the last one was 2 years ago or so, so maybe time for another go?

I'd like to do another de-motivational poster. :)

I suggested this...

Maybe we can bug SC to do it this time?

SC members have no more control over which challenges are posted (or when) than you do. Since some of us enter challenges, it would be unfair for us to know the topic in advance.

I am bumping this because I really want to do this in the near future. I have some great ideas, and I think it would be a fun challenge to do during the WPL

How about a special rule this time: reproducing anything from Despair.com is grounds for DQ.

Unfortunately, this is true. Honestly, I think that if anyone can produce a post from the net showing a pre-existing poster that is a duplicate or near duplicate (SC adjudication), that the entry needs to be removed (not DQ'd, just removed--as a person may inadvertently reproduce an existent poster--after all great minds do think alike). However, mayhaps we need to just throw a spin on this. Like instead of doing demotivational or motivational maybe we need to do a "meh" poster. Something showing the mundane nature of life, or have a specific catch phrase for a poster already in place. Like this: Challenge. Demotivation Poster. Must use the Heading, "RIBBONS - I see them all the time, just not in my profile"

Personally, I think that would be way way WAY too restricting. Might as well just have a Ribbon challenge.
What I love about this kind of challenge is that it is essentially a Free Study in which the person aims to be either funny and amusing, or deep and insightful. I like that there are many many different takes people can try

This would have left about 10 entrants in the last challenge.

If they think of it on their own without having seen the previous work then it is every bit as original as the other -- I'm not going to penalize anyone for that.

For that matter, we don't penalize people for mimicking or creating a parody of other art works, it doesn't make much sense to me to do so here. If you want to cast a low vote for an entry you think is an imitation of something you've seen before, go ahead -- I don't see why I need to get involved in rating how well you think the entry meets the challenge.

You are right of course. That post was in frustration over the lack of originality of some entries in the last demotivators challenge. I would really gauge it mostly on the quality of the photography. However, a unique idea that I have not seen before and is well done gets the top votes from me. Do an excellent reproduction of something on despair and I won't drop a 1 bomb, but it won't get the 8,9 or 10 either.

The only problem with this approach is that we don't know what a person has seen and purposefully mimicked or incidentally mimed. . . I know I can choose whatever parameters I wish when voting--the SC and community is very clear on that point with enough proof that I could post links to voting threads until this reply took up 8 pages. I don't necessarily disagree that we can mock or parody other works. . .CHEESE MAN! To a degree all of us are inspired by other works (one way or another). However, I will say this, direct plagiarism--as in directly cloning work--should never be allowed on any photography site due to the precedent it creates. This also should include the text and supporting phrases in Demo posters...because are they any less artists than we?

Ugh. No. Definitely not.

I hated these challenges. It seemed to me that the photo only decided about 15% of the score, if that. The choice of saying determined about 70-75% of the score, leaving the connection between the two to make up the rest.

These are supposed to be photography challenges, not "I can make up or find the most cheesy/witty saying" challenges.

Look at the last demo challenge, there weren't many originals, and that is fine. We can't screen for originality for two reasons. Proving that the submitter was aware of an existing similar work is impossible, and there is no way the SC has the time to even try to do that job. If you want to reserve three or five points in your personal voting, feel free. But be aware you might not know all the possible sources of plagerizable material, and the submitter may have re-invented the wheel. In those cases your originality points are going in the wrong direction.

Good points, as well as with General E. I am not disputing your wisdom on the topic, as it certainly is a bit higher than mine due to a heavy amount of experience. I did admit earlier than it is more than possible to "re-invent the wheel" during a challenge like this. . . I just wish it were not the case. Nor would I accuse anyone of the "p" word without indisputable proof. I also realize that the SC are busy. . .I just have other frustrations in some cases that link to this. I will live with them.
