I'm shakin' in my boots, guys. :(

I recently posted a thread about my camera breaking.. Just before it broke, I entered a picture I took with it in the Calendar challenge. The original image is TRAPPED on the broken camera. I don't have a card reader nor do I know anyone with a card reader.. I always upload my images by using the USB cable, and all of my editing is done on the camera.. Meaning the original has never even been on the computer. My image is doing very well (for me) and I have gotten many compliments.. Much better than I ever dreamed one of my images would do.

What do I do if someone questions my image or requests the original?! I can't get it! :(

All of my editing was within the rules... But I can't help being afraid. I would be upset if my best image ever got DQ'd just because my camera broke. :(

...Is there anything that I can do? Or do I just need to bite the bullet in this case? :(

Is there a camera store nearby where you live? I'm sure they could retrieve the file if need be.

You can buy a card reader almost anywhere and they are cheap ($10-15 for a decent one). Walmart has several models if you have one near you. I may even have an old one I don't need anymore if you can't get one.

are you shooting in JPEG? if you are the chances are that if you are editing in camera you do not have an original to begin with. Original JPEG images edited in camera does not leave you an "original file"...at least that is my experience.

I would not worry. Unless you are in the top 5 or some tags you for a dq investigation, your photo will likely never need to be sent in.

Edit: You're too young to be worring so much!

Is your photo stored on a SD card, or in the camera's internal memory? If the latter, then it can get quite complicated to retrieve the file, depending on how broken the camera is. You mentioned that the lens is useless, but that shouldn't prevent USB transfers.

If it's on the card, it should be rather easy: use Yo_Spiff's memory card reader, or use any device capable of reading a SD card (another camera, a phone, a GPS device, etc.)

If a card reader is that cheap, I can ask my fiance to pick one up for me today (he is 40 miles away in the same town as the nearest Walmart). It isn't just the lens that is broken.. The camera doesn't even turn on anymore. He sprayed some sort of binocular cleaner in it and all it does is beep when you press buttons. The original is on an SD card. I don't know if it's shooting in JPEG or not.. I am a total newbie and don't know how to find that stuff out.

When I take pictures for challenges, well...
When I do on-camera editing, it creates a copy of the original image, but with the changes in place... So it doesn't edit the original picture, it just makes a new one with higher saturation or whatever I told it to do. After I am done editing, there may be 10 copies of the same basic image on my camera, and I just delete all of them except the unedited original and the one I plan to enter in the challenge. I had no reason to believe I'd need to upload the original initially, so I didn't... And now I can't get it off.

Gyaban, I have a cellphone.. No idea if it can read the SD card or not.. And I don't have a cable to transfer photos to the computer with. I had always emailed my phone pictures to my email address when I needed them on the computer, but they lose ALOT of quality that way for whatever reason. If I had to email the original it would probably be very small and very grainy. Would that be alright? :/

I had a couple of comments on the photo that made me nervous. You'd think I'd enjoy such kind compliments.. And I do.. But it made me afraid that my image might be questioned. :( I am scoring better than I should be. I was shocked.

Grandma says I can use her card reader if I need it. She doesn't know how to work it anyway, lol.

Alrighty, I trust you guys. You haven't led me astray so far. Anways, I'm just not that good. ;D

I always get to thinking "what if"...

Don't forget to transfer your files using the drag and drop method. Many of the photo managing softwares will strip the EXIF data and that will be a DQ.

LOL do I have a reason not to trust you? Now I'm suspicious again... Not. ;)

Tolt, in a single word which I'm sure you understand: WHOA!!! You're acting like a bolter and so I'm using a pulley rein on you. (non-horsey dpc'ers, pm me if confused.

You haven't even been given a validation request, so far as I can tell. You're in a panic over essentially nothing. You're going to fret yourself into an early grave if you worry so much about the possibility that you might get a validation request. True, it does suck if you get a DQ, I've about 3 or 4 in the 5 years I've been here. But guess what, you will live to shoot another day. Just don't stress yourself further by going into a tailspin over what is probably nothing at all to worry about.

And should the dreaded validation request pop up? Well, look at the responses you've got already. The situation is quite salvageable. You're not the first person in this position and you won't be the last.

Deal with problems as they arise, try to not anticipate them possibly happening. And maybe read a good book I just finished, check your local library's new books shelves for Nerve: Poise under pressure, Serenity under stress, and the brave new science of fear and cool by Taylor Clark. Very well written and to the point.

LOL sorry. I have a very... What's the word.. Aloof? ..Personality. (Btw it even effects my riding. I tried riding a nervous arab once and we were feeding off eachother's nerves. It was awful) I'm always worried about something and I panic very easily.. Anxiety disorder, etc. My main concern is that this might be my best scoring image ever and I don't want it to get DQ'd. It will probably not even be in the top half of the images at the end, but it's a personal best for me.

:) Guess what though?
I didn't even need to borrow a card reader. The camera started working again. LOL I will post glowing horse pics later. Right now I'm on my way to work. :)

Thanks guys.

(Ps @ Snaffles: My boss has a horse that bolts and they tried a pulley rein on him. He then laid down and attempted to roll over. LOL.)

Only for now. Wait till you nail your first 6+. I'll be awaiting that excited post in the scores thread.

You have a glowing horse? Watch out for those.

I've been DQ'd - there are no real lasting effects -

maybe the twitching

oh, and the embarrassing smell so I have to leave dinner parties

I never was much of a looker anyway ...

so hey, no problem

trust us

Relax, Tolt, it's all good. And I do have a client who is also very nervous in the saddle, so I found a bombproof old schoolie for her. She is a lot more confident now, with a calm horse who doesn't feed off of her anxiety. Old horses make young riders, and old riders make young horses. And yep, your experience with the Arab would simply be taking an already-hot horse and like you said, feeding off of each other and things only getting bad (and dangerous).

And yes, it would still suck if you got DQ'd. But guess what? You'll soon be taking better and better images, and in a year or so will wonder how you got yourself in such a snarl over a couple of letters. And as you did the editing in-camera, you couldn't have done anything more than just basic editing anyway, right? So relax. Besides, I'm sure you want to be able to go to Dairy Queen occasionally and get a treat, without a panic attack :-)

OMG a horse that went from being a bolter to laying down and rolling...well at least you have time to jump clear! I had to reform a bolter, though in all honesty he was probably a gaming horse before my clients bought him. Anyway as soon as he felt weight in the saddle, he was ready to go, and would. I reformed Simba by getting on him with him facing the side of the barn, 5 feet away. Even he had more sense of self-preservation than that! He would still bolt, or try to, on occasion. But that was with me on board, and he soon realized it wouldn't work or get me off his back, so he quit doing it. And got sold on to a home where he is herd boss and lead trail horse.

We need some pix in this thread.
Do your glowing horses look like the ones around here? : )

Well gang.. Here is the least-fuzzy glowing horse image. Really, it isn't too bad. If I could edit it, it would be worthy of my horse forum's album.

//i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a403/Sootbind/Photos030.jpg

I wish it wouldn't have stopped functioning in terms of the lens not coming out, editing not working, etc. It might have been fun to take pictures of fog with it. :(

Sort of looks like the light leakage. Looks quite normal in the upper right but transitions to soft focus as you move to the bottom right.

Hey, around these parts that's called Gaussian blur, and nothing at all to be ashamed of. I bet that if you could get that effect, deliberately and in-camera, consistently, someone would pay you to get a portrait of their glowing horse (though you may be restricted to greys, palominos, duns, light bays, chestnuts etc for maximum effect).

And is that your fiance, holding the feedtub? He's cute! :-)

Just to echo some earlier advice... You probably don't need to worry too much about a DQ unless you're near the top...

On the other hand, I cringed when I read about your in-camera editing.. That's almost certainly destroyed the EXIF data, so you probably won't have an original file to submit at all...

But, don't worry! It's all a game, and you probably won't even be called into question.. Unless, of course, some pinheaded jerk reads this thread and reports you for a DQ because of editing in camera...

I'm with you Cory, but she did say that the editing creates a new copy of the image with the edits leaving the original intact. I know some of the newer P&S cameras have this feature. In fact my older Canon S5 IS which is an Advanced Point and Shoot with more bells and whistles than the average P&S (marketed as an in between of regular traditional P&S and entry level DSLR's) also had this feature.

but as I understand it...when working with JPEG (which is probably what Lindsey is working in) when you so much as rotate a picture on your camera it changes the EXIF file. Working/editing on your camera does alter your pictures...maybe Lindsey you need to send in a "test" file to the SC to find out for sure. You wouldn't want to wait until asked for validation to find out it wouldn't pass muster. Because from what you've said...your EXIF file is altered for sure...despite the Original file. This is exactly what happened to me when I got my first Dq. And I sent in a file from my ORIGINAL file on the computer...it was still altered. The only way from what I understand to have an un-altered picture is to work in RAW.
