I'm looking for a decent NAS Drive that has at least 2 drive slots. I would like to add an additional drive to back-up the original drive. I'm looking for a NAS drive for the simple reason that my wife and I both have a lot of pipctures (duplicates) on our computers, and to have us both be able to access the same photos without having the same photos on each of our computers I figured a NAS drive would be nice to have.
I considered adding a private/hidden gallery on my site, but that idea started to get WAY to hectic. We will still be storing galleries on DVD-R's, but I'd still like to be able to access photos instantly at anytime :-)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The local stores around here didn't give me many options, so I'll be ordering it offline.

I currently have an extra WD Caviar Black 1TB SATA drive that I'd be using as backup.

Thanks in advance.

I use a Drobo. It fairly expensive compared to other ones on the market, but I absolutely love it. I have it connected to my main computer and my father can access it through the network. Or, you can get a DroboShare and connect it straight to your network. The next level would be a subscription to //www.gotomypc.com so you can access your computer and file server from anywhere.

I use a Thecus but would not recommend it really - transfers are really slow, even over a gigbit connection.

The Synology DS411J looks pretty good.

I have been using a ReadyNAS from Netgear for a number of years and highly recommend them. You can read my review here, and there's a link to their site in my review.

Another vote for Drobo here, Ive been using them for years and have 4 at the moment and LOVE them, also the customer service is second to none.

Resurrecting this thread for a quick question about NAS drives.

Is it the case that the NAS would be visible as just another device/drive from either my Windows or Mac machines? - i.e. I can map it like a network drive?

And can I connect it directly to the network via wi-fi (i.e. not by sharing it as a device through my PC?)

If so, then it'd be feasible to use it as the primary storage for few thousand photos and videos, for updating/editing or whatever directly from any laptop/pc/mac on my network?

yes, yes, and yes. read this case study. they also have a decent forum that provides free tech support. some people think their paid support is pricey, but when you consider the value of what you're protecting, it's not that much.

[fwiw, i have a ReadyNAS NV+. it's a couple years old, but i will be upgrading within the year. at the moment i have it loaded with 4 2TB drives. 5+ years worth of images (about 800,000 images) are only taking up about 3TB.]

I actually ended up getting the Synology DS211

NewEgg Link

I opted to just get something that is smaller for now. I intend on moving in a year, and hopefully buying a house within a year of moving out of state, from Florida, to Colorado.

Once I get a house, I will probably look into a larger storage option as I don't intend on using Wireless in my new place, I want to have a wired network for higher speeds.

The Synology works well, stays cool, and have a pretty decent UI.
