This is not going to happen today or tomorrow but I was just wondering when I upgrade my body from the D40 to something... If I wanted to sell my D40 how much would it go for and to who should I sell it to?
It is in good condition with nothing but a little bit of sensor dust on it. I really don't have any problems with it. Nothing to my knowledge is wrong with it. Also with it I want to get rid of my 50mm 1.8 which I got new. Again nothing wrong with it. How much would both of them go for? |

| I don't know how much to ask for it, but the price will probably be at least somewhat dependent on the number of shutter actuations ... you should probably try to ascertain that number before you actually try to sell it. |

You may be able to get an idea of current price for the body by looking at recent sales over at fredmiranda.com. The D40 is not that old, there should still be some relatively recent sales to gauge by. Fleabay is another resource, but be very careful in which sales you use to compare.
Another option for a body like the 40D is to do an IR conversion on it. It's pretty economical these days.
The 50/1.8 is going for more new these days (about $135 USD) than it used to. If your lens is in very good shape, you should get about 70% of new value, so maybe $90-95.

Thanks! How might I find the number of shutter actuations? Just a guesstimate from the folders and folders I have on my computer? Or would I be able to get that number?
Any suggestions as to how I might go about selling it? Ebay? I want to get the most out of it as you can imagine. The money I get from it will go towards a new body/lens kit so all the money that I can get will help a lot! |

| A Nikon D40 will likely not get you much money due to the age of the technology and its limited capabilities with non AF-S lenses. My guess is that you might be able to get about $100 for it if in really good condition. Just note that the D3000 is the 'replacement' for the D40 and that goes for about 400 bucks new these days - and the D3000 has a lot of extras that the D40 doesn't. |

I don't know where it is for a Nikon, but for my Canon it's buried at the end of the EXIF in an "Image Number field; the fifth (and higher) digits show how many times the image counter has cycled past 9999.

The highlighted numbers show the relation between the image counter and the image number; the latter indicates that I'm on my fifth cycle of the image counter, and that this photo represents the 49,676th shutter actuation. The very first shutter actuation as shown in this format would be image number 1010001.

Here's a site I found recently that uses recent online sales to estimate the value of an item: Worthmonkey.com It's not always super accurate, depending on how many samples it found to base it's estimate off of, but it at least gives a ballpark figure. It says a Nikon D40 has a median price of $336, with $298 being on the lower side of reasonable. Based on 791 recent listings taken from Ebay Amazon & Craigslist.
Since Peter says the D3000 goes for $400 new, I would suspect this figure. I think some of the listings it uses may not have resulted in sales at the offering price.

I agree, and that's the reason for my warning on basing value on Fleabay sales. You have to be *very* careful, even when you filter to "completed" that you only include actually completed sales. Some that appear to be sales actually were not, for various reasons. |

B&H sells used D40 kits for over 400, seen them cheaper elsewhere. Since its a body only sale its a little harder to judge from those. |

The price you quote from B&H is for a refurbished unit - which means it has been fully repaired and updated by Nikon or a Nikon authorized repair center. A used unit without a lens will be much less than than retail. |

| Yeah i didnt look at it too hard the top of the page said used so i went with it lol. Shame its not a d60 body i am occasionally after a backup. |

Here's a link to an EXIF Viewer program I use. This is for a Mac, but I think one of the links leads you to a PC version.

Thank you all for the help. Should I sell it on ebay? or a similar site? Or should I go out and try and sell it to someone I know...
Again this is not going to happen today or tomorrow but I just wanted to get an idea for when I start looking. I have looked at some of the sites listed in this thread, and seem to have an idea as to how much I could potentially get out of my D40. Because I want another lens with my new camera purchase I could potentially get rid of my 18-55mm kit with it making it a full set to sell along with my 50mm f/1.8. I figure because it is used, I could get around 300 for everything which is body and two lenses.
Any thoughts about my guess on the amount? |
