I just found out that this photo won a special purchase award at our local Arts Council. I'll get $100 for the print, plus it gets permanent placement in the conference room at the Chamber of Commerce.

FWIW, it earned 145th out of 384 entries into the June Free Study.

It's worth the effort to enter local contests!

Congrats! Beautiful shot. I've entered pictures into our local fair and have done well with shots that didn't do fantastic in challenges, too. :)

Beautiful! It almost reminds me of looking into a kaleidoscope. Congratulations on your win!

Congratulations, Doug! There's a whole big wide world out there outside of this web site, huh? I'll have to check it out one day...

That is really neat! Congratulations!
I bet it would look good on a matte finish sord of oil painting like.

Thanks everyone! I printed it on Kodak Ultra matte finish paper with my HP PhotoSmart 7960 printer.

Most people comment that "It looks as if it were painted." I'm headed over to the gallery at lunch time to see it hanging with the other winners.

Congratulations!

Makes me want to see if there is a local art contest in my town, or a nearby town...

Most state fairs have photography categories. Unfortunately the Michigan State Fair just had its submission deadline (July 10th). If you have a local camera shop then you could ask if they know of any.

If your city has an arts council, there's a chance they'll have a contest. I found out about ours last year when they asked me to play guitar for them as background music for their reception.

My instrumental renditions of Radiohead and Neil Young tunes raised quite a few eyebrows.
