| When reading information given in American English (I'm from the UK) I occasionally find myself having to think very carefully to make sure that I've understood the underlying message of words or phrases. The use of 'offset' did just that for me. Having looked at the two previous challenges with this title, many of the images that did well were generally colourful (spelling differences I can cope with) rather than having a dramatic contrast between the brightly coloured sections and the rest of the image which is what I thought the use of 'offset' was supposed to mean. Does offset have to do with a strong contrast between the coloured parts and the rest or to put it another way 'standing out from the crowd' to give a dramatic impact, or is there a use of this word that is more subtle that I've missed? Maybe we're just talking about overall POW!!!(in the exclamation sense of course) Some gentle help with interpretation would be appreciated. |

| I think you first impression of the challenge description is correct. That the subject should be colorful to separate it from the background. I think the higher rated photos in the contests are due to their 'eye candy-ness'.... |

| I (as an American) also believe offset means in contrast to in this case. I believe your interpretation is correct. |

i agree, your interpretation is how i would interpret it also, but like apercep said, dpc likes eye-candy

Wow, there are some seriously over-saturated images in those first two challenges.

Lol yeah i got my first 6 in the second challenge. I pushed magenta over the entire image to give the red building that extra oomph but white and grey stuff turned pink lol. Semi happy when i saw this challenge. |

I think it is funny, when we as DPC members say, "DPC likes eye candy". Sort of a given considering this site dedicates itself to the promotion of that very thing. It makes a certain sense that images a bit heavy on visual "POW!!!" rate higher. After scrolling through several dozen shots of uncertain contrast and similar tone, a power saturate typically has a positive effect. A whole challenge of them however. . .lol.

| The trouble with parsing out the challenge description is that few of the voters will follow suit. The way I read the description is a small burst of color in an otherwise less colorful image such as a single red umbrella in a crowd of black umbrellas, would hit the nail on the head. However if you look at what the voters rewarded in the previous challenges, there is nothing wrong with that burst of color filling the whole frame. |

I love that "pow!!!!" but I really don't like it when i strive to meet the challenge and the top 10 photos are loose interpretations of the challenge criteria.. |

I thought that most of them fit -- even if it was a black background, the colors is what separates it from the background. There were a few that were just color on color, but I thought most fit. |

in burst 2 I'd say that 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 9th, and 10th places are leaning towards dnmc.. I'm not saying I don't like them, or that they are not great photos, just that I think that they did not "Use a colorful impact to offset your subject from the rest of the photograph."

I disagree about #2. I think the rest of the colors are actually quite dull and that it fits quite well.
I agree with you about 3rd, 6th, 6th, & 7th.
However, I think 9th & 10th work. |

KK.. I'll give ya #2 and #10.. But #9 is all color, (blue is a color).
Now #'s 12, 17, and 23... Those seem to me to meet the challenge more accurately.

For #9, I see orange as more of a burst of color -- and it does separate it from the background. Blue always did seem more of a background color. Perhaps it's just because they are complimentary colors, but because it's orange, it does seem to pop from the background.
It just says to use a colorful impact to separate from the rest -- not a colorful impact to separate from the dullness of the rest. |
