Recent threads inspired me to post this, cause I'm curious to know some of the stories behind the unusual names. And even the not so unusual. ** I really hate that the site doesn't automatically allow for avatars to show, I think this is my way of getting to be more familiar with people."

Kichu - what my Polish mom called me as a child (and still sometimes). It means 'kitten' in Polish. Pronounced KEY-chew. I doubt the spelling is right. Anyway, that is generally my online identity! :)

You?

My username comes from my days of playing wargames online. My initials are DA, which becomes Delta Alpha in the phonetic alphabet. I was Delta Alpha 6 - the 6 coming from the fact I always wanted to be in charge and 6 in a callsign denotes a commander - however people just called me Delta 6 instead so I shortened the name.

scalvert means I didn't think I'd hang around the site long enough to think of a clever name. I only registered to ask a question.

"Whereas the truth is that fullness of soul can sometimes overflow in utter vapidity of language, for none of us can ever express the exact measure of his needs or his thoughts or his sorrows; and human speech is like a cracked kettle on which we tap crude rhythms for bears to dance to, while we long to make music that will melt the stars."

I guess Pollacks is a North American term. I haven't come across it in Australia. Sounds derogatory.

I'm sure some people would consider it derogatory. I've never in my life heard it to be used that way though, so I'm pretty lighthearted about it.

My username is my first name, but I can tell you that it's Teutonic for "renowned warrior", and is the German/French form of the original "Aloysius", and I'm sure that's more than you wanted to know. :-)

In 1989 I was in Australia for the first time. My friend's mother Dione was up in Queensland on a 2 week trip with her birdwatching group. I was taking a dive course in Port Douglas and staying at a backpacker's hostel. Dione rang up the backpacker's and over the P.A. they said "there's a call for Frank the Yank from his surrogate mum".
