Don't know if this has ever been suggested or not - I haven't seen any discussion of it in thepast couple of years I've been viewing the site.
Has any consideration ever been given to splitting a given challenge into two parts - one for Advanced Editing and one for Basic Editing. That way individuals could compete in challenges from which they are not presently able to do so because of editing methods and also be competing only against those with similar editing preferences (Basic vs Basic, Advanced vs Advanced, but not Basic vs Advanced). |

Sounds like a good idea, but just think of the cost of all those extra ribbons:)

It was briefy considered at one time for the Free Studies, but has never actually been tried. |

| it would probably hurt voting, especially if one produces better images. It would be hard for me as a voter to remain objective in two identical topics. |

why would anyone choose to compete in basic? There are some people who prefer "basic" on principle, but this is a small minority (I think). The only other reason that comes to mind is to avoid tough competition with photographers which are good at post-processing and to try to get an "easy" ribbon in a handicapped competition. What's the next step - separate ribbons for those using P&S cameras?
...I thought that the basic ruleset was kept mostly to create an incentive for people to sign up for membership and being able to compete in member challenges with advanced rules.

If you've composed and exposed your picture well you often don't need more than Basic processing. And some people are not yet familiar with issues like adjustment layer masks and dodge/burn operations, and only use Basic-legal techniques anyway.
One advantage of this suggestion (as applied to Free Studies) is that people would probably find it easier to meet the 20% quota if there were two smaller challenges -- they could choose to vote in either or, optionally, both. |

| If it's just a matter of seeking a more level playing field, I would suggest entering a minimal editing challenge when they come up. That is where you find the folks that really know their camera and can take a great photo without a bunch of post-editing tricks. Also, side challenges are generally open to anyone and are a great place to learn. :) |

if your shot does not need any "advanced" tools, nobody forces you to use them. I sometimes stay within basic rules in advanced challenges, but I want to compete with the best anyway. And if people are not yet proficient with editing, they should, and they will, with time, if there is an incentive to do so. That's the purpose of site - to encourage learning, no?
As for voting, I suspect that most people would vote for either one or the other, so the number of votes per entry will halve.
My issue is actually the opposite. I remember ancient times when we had only one open challenge per week, and then we had to split it in two because we had too many entries. We are not exactly in the same situation now, are we? The number of entries on average has plummeted (67 and 69 this week for example). Having two concurrent and exclusive challenges dilutes the value of the result and therefore interest - I would prefer to compete against the best in all challenges I enter. And now we seem to drift towards 4 challenges a week, plus FS. Why? |

| Can't we just split each challenge automatically so that when there are more than 3 entries submitted to an individual challenge, a sub challenge will be added automatically. This will be sure to keep peoples attention spans enabling them to vote on every entry in each challenge they vote on, and distribute ribbons more fairly so that everyone can have a fair chance of getting at least one ribbon no matter what post production method they use!! |
